Debut v Everton ( h ) 24/1/20 A stylish half - back , Alex Rainnie gave determined performances for South Shields every time United's directors watched him . He earned a contract at St James Park in the years immediately following the Great War , but found opportunities very limited , being one of several half - backs in contention for a place . Alex never threatened first choice Jock Finlay , only once deputising for the Scot , although he was chosen for the North Eastern select side to play the Central League in 1921-22 . Alex later appeared for Darlington and for Ashington during their Football League seasons in the Twenties decade . During the hostilities he served as a chief petty officer in the Royal Navy .
