Sportrait It PROBABLY few South Shields supporters know that in the first team at pre sent is one of Soccer's minority a player who wears contact lenses . That player is George Saul , who has been with the Simonside club only since the start af the season , yet has already become one of the most popular members - a tribute to his fine play on the field and his cordial friendliness away from it . Saul has played for the Mariners mostly at right half , but can also acquit him self well in attack , which really isn't so surprising as he played centre forward in his junior days for Whitehall Juniors , a Gateshead club . His prowess with Whitehall brought him a county honour in 1947 when he played jeft half for Durham County Juniors In a national com petition . To this day his one regret is that Durham sucoumbed in the first round . West Ham became in terested and he was event ually signed by them , but in the few months he spent on their books no ohances came his way . Sunderland stepped in when George was released by the " Hammers " and he signed as professional , playing regularly In the reserve side in either wing half position . a Reason for his drop to the ' A ' team next season was hard to find until last Christ mas when George discovered that poor eyesight was letting him down , and this was the time when he decided to use contact lenses . When this season oame along Saul had a trial for the Mariners , was promptly signed on professional forms , and has consequently regained Eastern League status . Unless there is a marked deterioration in his play , he is there to stay . North M. SHIELDS FOOTBALL SAZRITES NOV . 1074. 1951 GEORGE SAUL . GEORGE SAUL . from Whitehall Juniors 1949.Right Half .
