By HORSLEY CRODESCAGNES REMEMBER the great friendly game between South Shields and Sunderland at Roker Park , played just before league football began again after the war . There 22,000 people at the match that day and the gate receipts were £ 945 . Ted Scanlon senior has happy memories of that game because he was in the South Shields forward Out of line , but no one oould forget the great day . South the 22,000 speotatore , about 0,000 were from Shields and wore leaving the town as early as 10.30 a.m. Ted's son , Ted junior , is also a footballer , but has played only in local football . Now he is at Jarrow as an amateur where he plays centre - half in the Reserve team . His father's career was packed with action . He also played for Jarrow in the North - Eastern League , and also assisted South Shields in the same league and in the Northern Victory League . Well Travelled ve WITH South Shields Ted senior played alongside such as Irvine Other clubs he has been with are Hamilton in the Scottish League , Lincoln City and Swindon . While with the latter olub , Ted senior was in com pany with Harold Fleming the famous English inter national forward who was noted for refusing to play : football on Christmas Day or Good Friday . Fleming and a Sunderland lad , Jefferson , formed a great right wing and received their international caps together . Like many lads who have blossomed out as foot ballers on leaving school , Ted junior did because he never played much as a schoolboy . Then he played for three seasons in the South Shields Junior League with Y.M.C.A. Juniors . With Y.M.C.A. IN that team at the same time were Bert Brenen , now of York City , Dave Smith and Alan Henderson . When he was over age for Junior Football , Ted went into the Y.M.C.A. senlor eleven , who were members of the South Tyne Alliance League and played with them until two seasons ago . Last season Ted joined Jarrow as amateur and after playing several games at centre - half was Donverted into a centre - forward , but he is now back in the half - back line with Jarrow Reserves . Ted is a good tennis player . Two years ago he got into the final of the Church Tennis League and with his sister Edna , was also in the final of the mixed doubles .. This year Edna and he were suc cessful in the mixed doubles and won the final in the Church Tennis League . Ted is also a keen cricketer , and although he does not play much now a - days he took an active part in the forming of the South Shields and District Junior Cricket League for boys under 18 .
