His second League game for South Shields was in the 8-2 defeat at Darlington in March 1927 and by the end of the following season he had played on the winning side in only 5 of his 39 games . Transferring to Newcastle United for £ 1,250 in April 1929 he found the Magpies to be struggling against relegation . Then it was Gillingham who had to apply for re - election . Still there was the odd highlight with Scott scoring once in South Shields ' 5-3 win at Southampton and twice in the 10-1 victory over Rotherham . George Scott was born in Blackhill , Co. Durham .
