If it does , it is correct , because there are two Routledges , brothers , Charlie , the elder , being a well - known Sath Shields cricketer , and Sam , popular as a footballer . SHIELDS FOCTBALL Charlie is a stalwart of the South Shields cricket team and although he has played the majority of his games on the second team , his ability with the ball is well known . He has assisted the Wood Terrace club for nearly 13 seasons now , and has a huge bag of wickets to his credit . Last season he went to play for Harton Colliery II who were in the running for the North Durham Senior League Second Division Championship , and in about five games for the club took more than 30 wickets Plays Tennis SAM plays tennis to keep fit in the warm season apart from playing in the Westoe first string was honoured by the County II last season . To be more seasonable we will turn to football in which game Sam is probably better known . At the moment he is a regular in Hexham's North Eastern League side , the club he joined after hita second spell with South Shields . He started playing football with the Westone Central School team in company with Jack Gordon , the former South Shields centre - half . Jack was a full - back in those days , and Barr back and it is strange that the positions are to - day . How Sam became a full - back is the same story over again . Cleadon C. I. , the club he joined on leaving schom ! needed a full - back badly . Sam filled the bill and has bee in that position ever since . Ambition LI IKE most fellows who play in the defence , his one ambition has been to play forward but up to the present he has not realised his ambi tion . Sam came to Shields as an amateur from Cleadon in the first season of the new Horsley Hill club , stayed a sea son and then moved on to Jarrow , still as an amateur . He signed professional forms at the beginning of last season and later returned to the Shields fold only to leave for Hexham at the be ginning of this season While at Jarrow , Sam appeared against his old Shields colleagues but his memories of that game are not happy ones . Coming into collision with Jack Victory in the Jarrow v . Shields Christmas Day game , he put his shoulder out with the result that he spent Christmas Day in bed . KAZETTE 41 SAM ROUTLEDGE Hockey |
