HULL CITY ENTERTAIN SOUTH SHIELDS . The conditions were ideal for the visit of outh Shields to Hull this afternoon , the urf being in almost perfect condition . In view of Hull City's danger of relegation nd the Shieldsmen's prospects of promo ion , the game was vested with more than rdinary interest . As expected , Willis Valker broke his long sequence of 115 con ecutive appearances owing to sickness , and Richards deputised for him . An injury o Wilson enabled Hird to come in at right alf . THE GAME . - Seven thousand people saw South Shields tart and City , were at once dangerous , but offside spoilt the effort . Smith and Matthew . on were prominent for a piece of smart ombination , but Oxberry eshot in weakly . Lewis took up a favourable position at the ther end , but shot badly with several of his colleagues waiting to walk the ball into the 1et . M'Gee set Thomas away , but the South Shields backs had no need to worry as the home wing inan was soon whistled offside . Play was not of a very bright description , ind both teams seemed to be feeling their way and taking the measure of their oppo . nents . Mills placed accurately from a corner and Crown was in difficulties . GOAL FOR HULL . After ten minutes Hull took the lead . Rid ley was adjudged to have handled just out ide the penalty area , and despite the loud protests of the Shields players , the referee awarded a free - kick . LEWIS was entrusted with the kick . He crashed the ball against the crossbar , and it rebounded into the net , Richardson having 16 chance . After this success City played with any amount of confidence , and South Shields defenders were kept musily mployed for the next few minutes . the NARROW ESCAPES . Oxberry got through for Shicids . but he nade the mistake of shooting far too soon , nstead of going up to Mercer as he should have done . Consequently , the goalkeeper asily cleared . Bolam shore with a fine individual effort , and he was right through when Mercer ran ut to meet him and took the ball as the ringman was about to shoot . It was arrow escape for the City . Havelock made fine opening for Smith , but the latter was ot sinart enough , and he was easily dis ossessed by Crown . The Shields defence 105 often har : 1 ressed , the " Tigers " adopting forceful tac ies . The bome forwards forced their way to the penalty area , where Crown cleared a great style , while a few minutes later Rid y brought of an equally clever clearance . M'Gee set the home forwards going , and Ithough changed he got in a great shot hich tested Richardson . The owever , made a brilliant save by taking the all with one hand . Ridley was conspicu us for some smart defensive work shortly efore the interval .. custodian , Hali time se : Hull City South Shields The gate had increased to 8,000 after the nterval . The most danger in the ,, South hields attack appeared to emanate from olan on the left , who was speedy , tricky . nd resourceful . But he received only oderate support and too often worked lone . Ridley put in some very fine work , his icking being almost faultless . Hesitancy on the part cf Blcakeley and ell enabled the visitors to enjoy a speli f attacking , but there was little or no sting ehind their efforts MODERATE PLAY . take It was only a moderate game with the City lightly superior and having obtained the ad they were not disposed to ny risks in the later stages of the game . The Shields forwards forced their way hroug only for Matthewson's shot to be el lcleared by Mercer . The Tigers soon fterwards returned to the attack and ichardson was hard pressed when he hade a superb save from Lewis . The visitors applied pressure through fatthewson but after making a delightful pening had his centre wasted . Another South Shields attack soon fterwards ended in Mercer throwing imself full length to clear from Bolam . A corner kick to Preston was cleared and a free kick by Shotton went wide of the Shields goalmouth . Preston Colliery The concluding half opened with Pres ton making a strong attack , and Conaty headed into Browning's hands . Dawson , from the touch line . also tried a shot at goal without success , and for a while the Colliery played in surprising fashion . Stott also got in a powerful shot which Browning dealt with cleverly when the home team took up the running Wood , from long range , hit the bar . An injury to Greenwell unfortuately caused the inside left to retire , and he had to receive attention from the trainer on the line . Later the Shields inside left hda to be taken off the field altogether . Midvay through the half Thompson and Wood ; made a strong effort , but the centre with his final effort , shot narrowly past the upright . Preston were holding their own , bu Dawson , Swann and Conaty all made good but unsuccessful efforts to beat the home defence . With five minutes to gq ETHERING . TON took his chance and from just inside the penalty area shot a fine goal for the home tean . Taylor went full length in his effort to save , but the ball entered the net just inside of the upright A minute before fime WOOD added R second goal .
