Second League . DERBY COUNTY V. SOUTH SHIELDS . South Shields were the visitors to the Baseball Grounds , Derby , to day , where they were entertained by the County team in the first Second League game between the sides this season . South Shields had three ! chances in their forward line . Guyan and Oxberry appearing for Stannard and Green - 1 well , who were both injured in the cup - tie at Burnley last week . while Parker was ' again fielded at outsido left for Bolam . Derby also had two changes , Thoms appearing in the place usually filled by Weightman at centre half.while Ritchie dis placed Crilly'at left back . The teams were : Derby - Olney ; Chandler , Ritchie ; McIntyre , Thoms , Plackett ; Thornewell , Whitehouse . Galloway , Storer , Murphy . Shields - Walker ; Ridley , Crown : Wilson , Hardy . Metcalf ; Matthewson , Smith , Guyan , Oxberry and Parker . Referee : -Mr J. E. Telford , of Preston . BOLAM TAKEN ILL . There was a last minute change in the Shields team . Rolam had been taken ill overnight and Parker was wired for . There were 9,000 spectators present when the teams turned out . The weather had changed from a spring - like morning to a dull , rainy afternoon . The opening exchanges were quiet and somewhat uneventful , though both centre . forwards were tripped in flagrant fashion by the backs when they had got through . In the second instance Crown triod to put back to Walker , but the ball stuck in the mud and Galloway , who had followed up , was rushing past Crown when he tripped . him . The free kick came to nothing . Hardy was hurt in a collision with Thome , but he soon recovered , and Walker had a terrific drive from Galloway to BAVO . He dealt with it in nasterly style . Derby could not cope with the offside tac . tics of the Shields defenders and there was too much whistle heard . DERBY TAKE THE LEAD . After fifteen minutes Derby took the lead in brilliant fashion . Chandler got in a good clearance and TORER seizing on the ball , shot from twenty - five yards range , beating Walker with a first - time drive .. Walker had no chanca the shot which beat him but ne saved his side from further lisaster in the next five minutes by saving brilliantly from Storer , and also a penalty kick taken hy Murphy . This latter concession was given Derby for a bad case of " punching out " by Crown , who atopped a certain goal when he fisted out Plackett's shot , Walker making a brilliant save . from the spot kick . HURRICANE SCORING . Crowr . was weak in the visiting defence . He kicked badly , and time after time he was too late with his tackling . Little was seen of Shields , and when Matthewson tried 011 individual effort Ritchie proved too good for him . Derby pressed hard and long , and only Walker's grand ofsarances kept them out . STORER 8cored a second goal for Derby at the end of 33 minutes ' play , and MURPHY added a third a minute later , while STORER put on the fourth at the end of 38 minutes . Shields seemed to collapso before the bril . liant attack and wonderful shooting of the home team . Half time score : Derby County South Shields 4 → Crown had been hurt just before the intorval and he did not rot . The visitors had to rearrange their forces , Wilson going full back and Sinith right - half . DERBY COUNTY 142230111121131 SOUTH SHIELDS These misfortunes made the game very . one - aided , and the only attacks which Shields got in were when Oxberry tried an individual effort , only to shoot over , and when Guyan ran close in only to be over . hauled by Chandler and robbed when be had only Olney to beat . Shields had a distinctly narrow escape when Murphy allowed a clean pair of heels to Wilson and shot right across the goal . Bouth . Walker saved from point blank range from Galloway , and though he could only punch the ball out to Storer he threw himself full - length at the latter's following shot , making another grand save . PRETTY BUT NOT EFFESTIVE , It was all Darby ereabouts , but the for wards were holding the ball far too close and though the crowd shouted for more guals the inside men tried to weave patterns in the mud . It was all very preity to watoh , but no good from the crowd's point of view , CROWN onverted a penalty kick for Shields and PLACKETT and GALLLOWAY scored for Derhy before the finish .
