( Continued froin Page 2 ) .
South Shields obtained the lead when the game was twenty two minutes old . Matt . hewson came away on the right and from his delightful centre which drew , the goal keeper . GREENWELL smartly lobbed the hall over the heads of the backs into the net . The Seasiders ' early success which was wel ! deserved , put the crowd in excellent humour .
The visitors nade a vigorous response , but their combined work was not convincing , and individual " thrusts " were always suc cessfully dealt with by Crown and Ridley , who were playing fautlessly . out to deal with a long shot from Noble , and when the eds right winger again returned to the attack he gained a corner which was not productive .
Walker ran
Play was more even now with both sets of forwards frequently dangerous , but the defences on both sides were always sound and the custodians were not often troubled . From Stannard's pass Smith found himself again well placed , but his effort was nulli fied owing to his failure to trap the ball on the treacherous ground .
Bolam made good headway , but he was hopelessly wide with his centre , and when Harris and Swan transferred the sphere of operations , the Shields defenders had to have their wits about them to cope with the danger .
HARDY TO THE RESCUE .
A free kick against Wilson proved helpful to the visitors , but Hardy came to the rescue , and with his clearance onabled Stannard to break away in the centre . The Shields leader , however , failed to keep control , and his progress towards an open goal was checked by Speak .
Walker fisted out a long shot from Noble , and then followed a thrilling run by Green well , which compelled Down to rush out several yards to kick away . Crown made a brilliant clearance when Noble and Whipp were threatening , and once again South Shields forwards got into their stride , only to he pulled up through the enterprising tactics of Duffield and Speak . Crown brought off another marvellous clearance by dispos sessing Richmond when the visiting leader had the goal at his mercy .

After the interval , the Seasiders were the first to apply pressure , but their attack was short - lived , and at the other end Crown and Ridley were given plenty to occupy their attention . When the second half was Ave minutes ' old . Shields obtained their second goal . Metcalf was fouled just out . side the penalty area , and CROWN , from the free kick , completely beat the custodian with a delightful shot .
The visitors were dangerous through Harris and Swan , and the inside man had a great chance when he missed the ball alto gether , and Hardy nipped in and cleared . Crown was an outstanding man , and he and his partner were responsible for brilliant defensive : work . Matthewson made a clever touch line min , only to be hustled of the ball at the last moment . hy Speak , while at the other . end , Smith and Stannard both bungled when Bolam had middled the ball accurately .
Greenwe !! distinguished himself by 8 clever individual effort . but after beating his first two men he was at fault with his pass to the wing .
LEEDS AGGRESSIVE .
Walker had to leave his goal to intercept a centre by Noble , and matters were looking somewhat critical for the Shields defence when the Leeds right - winger got himself offside and Crown's free - kick brought the Seasiders welcome relief .
The visiting forwarde were playing with much better understanding than in the . earlier stages of the game , but they had no uck in front of goal . Again and again they returned to the attack , butt on each occasion were decisively repulsed by the Shields lefenders .
Ridley throught off a fine stackle when Whinn had worked he way through , and the South Shields forwards then took a hand in
