narrowly missed the upright with Walker lying at full length . Then McKay beat two opponents and almost got through ; but Ridley threw himself at the ball and jus : managed to clear in the nick of time Near the interval Bolam tried to get going on n the right but Chapman , how
ever cleared in quick time .
South Shields visited Craven Cottage this afternoon for the opening match of the season with Fulham . When the teams met in London at the end of last reason the Seasiders won by the only goal scored . while in the return game at Horsley Hill , they again captured both points by two clear goals ..
The South Shields team included their two new wing ment , Bolam and Brown , and Fulham had the assistance of Doyle , a cleve : inside - forward recently secured from Airdrieonians . The teame turned out as follows :

Hird and Hutchinson were both taken ill this morning , and the former had to be left in bed at the Palace Hotel . Lillycrop was registered the morning to take Hutchinson's place , but the latter was declared fit to play . Lillycrop has not played for two seasons . Smith took Hird's place at right half back and Hetherington came in at inside right .
THE GAME .
Twenty - five thousand spectators were present when the game started . There were several clever short passing move ments by Green well and Simms , and from one of these Reynolds had to run out to clear .
The Cottagers on the right wing then came into the picture , but a smart tackle by Crown relleved the pressure . A nice pass by Doyle gave an opening , but the home leader sent wide , when well placed .
McKay
Ridley , hereabouts , was playing a fine defensive game and he was the means of stopping several dangerous attacks by the Fulham forwards . A clever combined effort by McKay and Doyle gave the latter a great chance , but Ridley took the ball off his toe .
The Shields defenders were hard pressed for a while after this and Walker's charge had a narrow escape when Penn ahot wide from a good position
STRUCK THE UPRIGHT .
SATURDAY , AUGUST 25TH , 1923
Heard struck the upright during an exciting attack upon the Shields goal , the ball rebounded into play while a few minutes later Hutchinson , to avert disaster was obliged to concere & corner which proved of no avail .
Brown and Simms were always triers in the Shields attack . but Chaplin and Fleming the rulham defenders , took a lot of beating . Osborne and Heard were nearly through with a smart short passing movement but a centre by the former saw McKay cleverly dispossessed by Ridley , when the Fulham leader was in the act of scoring .
Hutchinson sent a well placed pass out to Brown , but the latter was beaten in a raid for possession after receiving the pass .

Fleming and Chaplin were playing , a very strong defensive game and were con stantly checking any movement which looked dangerous , while Hutchinson was playing well despite his illness which overtook him this morning .
