STOCKPORT COUNTY v . SOUTH SHIELDS .
South Shields , who are making a bold bid for promotion were the visitors to Stockport to - day . There was one change in the composition of the visitors ' eleven , Parker , a serve outside left , being intro duced to the exclusion of Brown . The teams were :
South Shields . - Walker ; Ridley , Onown ; Wilson , Hardy , Hutchinson : Bolam , Heth erington , Simms , Greenwell , Parker .
Stockport County.- Hardy ; Richardson , Reid ; Waterall . Cockburn , Morrison ; Critchley , Purcell , Woodcock , .. Sambrook Edgley .
Referee . - Mr P. B. Johnson ( Sheffield ) . Owing to the inclemency of the weather , there were only about 5,000 spectators at the slart . South Shieldé made a promising opening , and after six minutes ' play they obtained the lead .
Richardson ,
the Stockpcrt right - back , slipped in making a clearance , and Simms was quick to take advantage of the oppor . tunity to dash in and tako possession . He gave a meat pass to HETHERINGTON , who was more favourably placed , and the Shields side - right , who easily beat Hardy .
STOCKPORT EQUALISE .
Stockport retaliated and six minutes after the Shieldsmen's success WOODCOCK got The possession close in and equalised . visitors weee again aggressive and Simas who was going strongly was checked just outside the penalty area .
A free kick was awarded against Richard . son but IIutchinson's shot was successfully dealt with . Critchley was making headway on the Stockport right wing when Hitchin son intervened and 1 few minutes
later Waterall put the ball into the Shields goalmouth where Purcell tried a header which was
unsuccess
ful . Greenwell made a good attempt to break through , but his shct passed across the face of the goalmouth and went behind . There was another determined attack by the South Shields forwards , led by Simms , and after the latter had taken the ball from Richardson , he was held up by Reid , who saved a dangerous situation ..
Play was very fast and full of excitement . Critchley nearly gave Stockport the lead with a capital half - volley , following a centre by Edgley .
DEFENDERS BUSY .
Woodcock received an opening through a miskick by Crown and ran the ball into the goalmouth , but Walker came out and kicked away . Woodcock then tried a shot from long range which Walker cleverly saved .
The Stockport forwards were playing an ; open game , and Ridley and Crown were on several occasions hard pressed . At this stage of the game most of the play was in the visitors ' half .
A foul by Richardson gave South Shields a free kick and Parker dropped he ball into the goal mouth but Hardy ran out and kicked the ball away . The home forwards forced a corner on the left and Waterall shot into Walker's hands .
Critchley made two gcod attempts to break through , but he was beaten on each occa sion by Crown . Ten minutes before the inter val Edgley put the fall into the Shields goalmouth and in attempting to make a clearance , Ridley nearly put through his own goal but Walker managed to get the ball away .
MORE GOALS .
The danger was only temporarily averted , however , for Waterall sent in a hot shot from which PURCELL se Stockport the lead . The visitors applied vigorous pressure for the remainder of the opening half , and the County defenders were often in difficulties Three minutes before aif time , the shieldsmen gained a corner on the right ,. and Bolam placed accurately from the flag - kick .
Simms got his head to the ball and PARKER , being presented with an excel lent opening , had no difficuity in again equalising the scores .

The spectators had increased to 11,000 when play was resutned . Edgley put across a fine contre but Ridley kicked away , while at the other end a movement was checked on the left . For a few minutes the South Shields defenders were hard pressed .
Waterall had hard luck with a long shot which struck the crossbar . Stockport pressed and Sambrooks and Walker raced for possession . They reached the ball together and the ball passed under the custodian's hands towards the net but Crown dashed up and clearel .
