The teams turned out before 13,000 spectatore as follows : South Shields . - Walker ; Ridley , Robson ; Wilson , Hutchinson , Metcalfe ; Matthewson , Smith , Guyan , Thompson , Brown . Coventry City . - Best : Randel , Lawrence ; Richmond , McLachlan , Rowley ; Dougall , Shea , Pynecar , Storey , Herbert . Referee : Mr H. W. Andrews . THE GAME . At the start Bouth Shields had the advant age of a slight breeze , but they were quickly on the defensive , Bobson olearing a danger . ous centre from Herbert . After a brief incur sion by Brown and Thompson , Coventry re turned to the attack , Shea heading over from Herbert's centre . Hutchinson , stopped a smart movement by Shea and Pynegar while shortly afterwards Dougall placed the ball into the Shields goalmonth for Ridley to head away . Guyan endeavoured to set his forwards going , but Randel npset their calculations . Coventry again attacked for Walker to handle a long shot from Rowlev . From a free kick Thompson shot over the bar , after which Hutchinson was conspicuous for clever tackling with the result that the Coventry attack was confined to a limited area . SHIELDS ATTACK . From a pass by McLachlan , Herbert missed by a foot with a great drive . Brown , with a delightful run , took play to the other end where Smith shot into Best's hands when well placed . The Coventry custodian had a more difficult task a few minutes later when Guyan drove in a hard shot which Best cleverly handled . A promising movement initiated by Dougall was spoilt through an offside infringement . Play was now very even with the defences always overshadowing the attack . A lively ball on a hard ground frequently upset well . laid schemes . but tthe Shields forward play was improving and they gave the Coventry defence plenty of work . CITY'S NARROW ESCAPE . From a centre by Brown , Guyan looked like getting through , but he was charged off his shot by Lawrence in the goalmouth and the ball was diverted wide of the posts . At the other end Walker saved a " header " from Storey and Ridley checked a rush in the goalmouth . There was little to choose between the teams at this period play being very inter .. esting , fast and of the end to end order . Walker saved smartly from Rowley and then Guyan made a promising attempt to break through but his shot went astray .. The visitors attacked strongly thanks to their fine half - back play , but the forwards failed to get through and when Coventry ; again took up the running they met with 20 better results . Best made a good save rom Matthewson and Walker had to deal with a header " from Shea . Thompson nissed a good opening while at the Shielda ind Pynegar was pulled up in good position . Half - time Score : South Shields Coventry City Shields attacked strongly soon after esuming and the first incident of note was n attempt by Guyan to force his way hrough but his shot was wide of the mark .
