LEICESTER CITY SHIELDS . SOUTH There was great stackening in the severity of the frost when South Shields arrived at Teicester . and the weather con . ditions when they turned out to face Lei cester City were mild . The ground had been carefully prepared and was in excellent con dition when all the circumstances were con . sidered . Neither teams were changed from last week and the crowd would number about 18,000 when the teams lined out . Leicester played in red jers y cring to the fact that the Shields colours were blue . M Winston Churchill was present when Leicester won the toss . From the outset the home team demon strated a superiority of play and were very persistent in their attacks . For some min utes they kept the Shields defenders well on the qui vive and Chandler and J. Duncan were prominent . Graham assisted the left wing up their attacks , but Walker was well prepared for their assaults . Once Chandler nearly scored , but Walker just got his fist to the ball . The visitors then followed with a spell of attacking and Hebden was called upon to save from Simms and Hetherington . LEICESTER'S HOT PRESSURE . The City returned to the attack and J. Duncan forced , a corner which was success fully leared , but the home pressure was not relieved until Chandler had headed in for Walker to save and Graham to put behind . 1 The visitors again assailed Hebden's stronghold and for a little time it looked as though they would score , but although Hebden was unable to stop Greenwell's shot the ball was cleared and Simms put into touch . The visiting net was reached by Graham but the latter had already been signalled off side . LEICESTER OPEN THE SCORE . There was some pretty play on the left wing in which Graham and O'Brien distin guished themselves . The ball was passed right across the field to T.Duncan , who worked he way through cleverly and shot only inches wide . The pressure of the City was not relaxed and the ball came up again with the left w and Trotter put across a lovely swinging centre which GRAHAM received almos : on the penalty area and just beat Walk with a splendid drive after twenty minutes play . Almost immediately following this goal came another brilliant shot from Chandler , which Walker was clever to save . Shields now had a spell of attacking , but were soon driven back and the City came ngain . Chandlor was given offside . Walker had to sava from Graham . on LEICESTER'S SECC.ID GOAL . Lelcester's second goal was scored at heavy ecst . The ball had come again from the left and CHANDLER , who was well placed , found the net . As he did so Walker , in attempting fasave , caught him in the face with his foot , and he had to be assisted from the field . 2 Just prior to this Osborne was also hurt , but he was only away from the scene of action for a few minutes . The visitors took advantage of the absence of Chandler and atterned with great deter miñation . Hebden was tested by Simms , Grerenwell and Hetherington in rapid suc . ression , and was once hot ly pressed by Hetherington . but he saved in wonderful style . A few minutes later , when again assailed , he was beaten by Simms , but almost on the goal line Thoineon cleared . Leicester retaliated with more spirit and vigour , and in three minutes they forced four corners A loud outburst of applause greeter Chand ler when he returned to the field , and almost immediately he was in the thick of the fray . He dashed down and beat both Crown and Ridley , but only a corner resulted . Ridley then cleverly defcatch a movement by Trotter and Graham , and when Shielde retaliated Hebden was loudly cheered for a wonderful save . SATURDAY Hetheringlon had got through by himself and found only the goalkeeper before him . The custodian came out of his charge for a few w yards and was thus able to catch the shot before it reached the net . The game was getting faster every minute . and at the other end Walker was clever at returning a shot from T. Dubican . Half - time acore : Leicester City South Shields terrific On resuming Leicester sup attack and Walker was assai by shots from Chandler , Duncan and Gratim , but they all LOST DECEMBER 151 , 1923 рекор палатея way wuul uimieunty . In the next minute the home goal had anclber narrow escape from a scrimmage in the goalmouth , but Richardson eventually cleared . Lambert . the home centre . trane Terred operations to the other extremity , but Rodgerson again saved a difficult situation with a timely kick .. The visitors at this juncture again assumed the aggressive , and there was an exciting few seconds in the home . th , buth Richardson eventually clenrcl his Jinet . Soulshy , the Spennyinoor centre - forward , got a flier down the field ; Richardson ran o to meet him but missed the bali . Sculaby rani the ball right into the open goal , but was disprosessed at the last moment by Davies . ' and the danger was averted , It was a lucky escape for the Shieldsmen . In the closing stages of the game Smith and Matthewson t ed hard on the right wing to beat the visiting defence . Edwards , however , was well covered by his backs and the Shields forwards were repeatedly pre : vented from getting into shooting distance .
