Second League : SOUTHAMPTON ENTERTAIN SOUTH SHIELDS . South Shields visited Southampton this afternoon with considerably weakened Laam . In the absence of . Bimms the leader hip was entrusted to Hetherington , and in he half - back line Metcalfe appeared in place of Hutchinson , who is on the sick list . The weather was fine but the going was heavy . There were about 10.000 spec was in in tators at the start . The opening exchanges were brisk , South Shields being the first to apply pressure . SHIELDS HARD PRESSED , Shields had to defend frequently to keep he lively home forwards out . Rawlings neaded into Walker's hands from 8 fine centne by Carr .
