As already indiented in our news column South Shiefde hnd to take the fich today . with several changes in the team owing to llness and nuties . There were no further changes to report . however , on either side . and the team's took the field as follows :
South Shields . - Walker : Wilson . Robson ; Hird , Hardy . Metcalfe : Matthewson , Smith , Guyan , Oxberry and Bolan ::
Darby County . Oiney : Chandler , Ritchie : McIntyre , Thom . Plackett : Thornewell , Whitehouse , Galloway , Storer , and Murphy . The gentleman in charge was Mr Tonilin son , of Sheffie : d , acting for Mr Telford , who was originally appointed but was changed cwing to the difficulties of travelling on account of the railway strike . Fortunately the weather kept fine overhead , but a strong wind was blowing towards the sea , rnd there we a damp feeling in the air , but the real enthusiast takes no head of such items and defics things like the ' flu " when his fay ourile game and players are to be seen .
There were about 9,000 spectators at the start . Walker , the Shiclds captain , lost the toss , and Derby kicked towards the sea with

the wind behind them . Shields made carly headway and Bolam was soon given all opportunity by his partner but his shot I went into touch . Fran the kick off Derby made a little headway by the aid of Thorne will and Whitehouse only , however . to be sent back through the cleverness of Met calfe . Still they came back again and some clever play on the left wing enabled Gallo way to put across to his outside right who however , was promptly whistled offside .
SHIELDS MAKE PROGRESS . Shields again made progress on the left only for a short time , however , owing to the smartness of the Derby halves and the next item of interest was & long pass out to Thoms who was given offside , Smith , Guyan and Oxberry were very persistent , but not quite good enough for Plackett and Thoms , whose good work enabled Thornewell to have a clear run in . Ile made a good centre which Wilson headed out , but it went to the feet of Murphy , who promptly put it well over the bar to the disappointment of his own comrades . Murphy had a great opportunity and ought certainly to have done better than he did .
The tale of the game was taken un by Shields and Ritchie , the Derby left - back , had to be very quict in order to prevent Mat thewson from making headway
