SHIFLos SATURDAY , SECOND LEAGUE . During the interval the marking of the ground were well cleared and there was a better prospect of the game being South Shields Visit the played to a finish , no snow having fallen after the quarter of an hour . Potteries . STOKE OPPOSED . There was a heavy fall of snow at Stoke to day where South Shields were the visitors . Although the pitch had been cleared it had A sodden appearance , and was in a very heavy condition . South Shields were better represented than they had been in recent games , and Bloke had a fairly strong side out . The teams were : Stoke - Dixon ; MoGrory , Davies ; Brough , Kasher , Rouse ; Broad ( T. ) , Davies ( H. ) , Pad ( J ) , J. Roxburgh , and Ralpha Bouth Shields : -Walker ; Crown , Robson ; Wilson , Hardy , Hutchinson ; Matthewson , Smith , Hetherington , Oxherry and Bolam . Referee : Mr E , Farrar , of Leeds . PLAY IN SNOWSTORM . Five minutes before the game commenced there was another hlinding snowstorm and by the time the teams made their appear . ance the ground was opvered . It seemed doubtful whether the game could be finished because it was impossible to see to the lar limits of the field at the commencement of operations . Although facing the storm South Shields were at once dangerous and the right wing initiated a promising effort which was spoilt through the ball being driven away before a centre could he got in by Matthewson . After a brief incursion bys the " Potters , " the Bhields right wing pair were again in evidence but Davies , the opposing back put an end to the movement . A smart piece of work by Bolam , a few minutes later , looked like producing good results but T. Broad intervened successfully , when the visiting left winger looked like going through . During an attack by the Stoke forwards , Roxburgh struck the side of the net with a olever shot . Stoke applied considerable pressure at this stage and a corner was forced but Crown , the Shieldsmen's tall defender , headed safely away from the flag kick . TRYING CONDITIONS . The honie team were doing most of the attacking with the gale at their backs but the playing conditions were such that accu . rate football Was out of the question , although fairly interesting play was witnes sed . Bouth Shields made a break away and Oxberry found himself with a capital open ing but drove wide of the mark . Both the Stoke wingmen testori Walker with shots which the goalkeeper fisted out . J. Broad then broke through and banged the ball past the post . Hardy , the Shields centre - half . proved himself very useful in breaking up the movements of the Stoke forwards . On several occasions he frus trated their efforts when they were shaping dangerously , while both Crown and Robson defended splendidly . EVEN PLAY . The players were finding it exceedingly hard going and the heavy ground , but play was fairly even . Hetherington shot wide , following a corner and a few minutes later the Shields leader tried a long shot which Dixon caught . There was very little between the two teams and thrills were entirely absent . A taid by Stoke saw the Shields goal in some danger , the ball being sent squarely accross the goalmouth by J. Broad , but before another forward could reach it the ball had passed into safety . J. Broad again broke through and Walker displayed fine judgment in running out from his goal and taking the ball practic ally off the forward's toe . The best effort so far was made by Matt hewson who , outting in for goal , sent in a fast shot which Dixon very smartly held . At the other end Walker had to deal with & shot froin Rouse and the Shields goal had a nafrow escape when the ball fell close to the post but the custodian managed to get it away . Half time score : Stoke South Shields FOOTBALL MARCH 155 1924 2 As in the first half , the Shieldsmen were the first to attack and the left wing was prominent for clever combined work , but the forwards were rarely dangerous at close quarters owing to the treacherous state of the ground , and it was not often that either side made any great headway . SARETTE A GREAT DEFENCE . Ralphe tried a long shot which Walker saved and a corner which fell to the " Pot ters " was also successfully dealt with . MPYY A The League : -- Division II .
