Second League . NELSON ENTERTAIN SOUTH SHIELDS . The visit of South Shields to Nelson attracted a crowd of only 5.000 , the " gate " being affected by attraction at Burnley . the counter played their latest captures , Kennedy , a centre half from Denaby United , and Humphrey , outside left from Stockport County . teams turned out as follows : SHIELDS SATURDAY , Nelson Nelson : Abbot : Wilson , Lilley ( T. ) ; Newnes , Kennedy , Broadhead ; Hood , Caulfield , Eddleston , Wolstenholme , and Humphrey South Shields : Walker ; Ridley . Rob son ; Wilson , Hardy , Metcalfe ; Matthew son , Smith , Guyan , Oxberry , and Bolam . EARLY GOAL FOR SHIELDS . The a Nelson's new players wero given good , reception . Shields won the toss and took advantage of the wind . Nelson were first to attack and Ridley conceded a corner to effect a clearance . An offside infringement gave South Shields an advantage and weak play by Wilson , the home defender , enabled the visitors to secure the lead two minutes after the start . 14 1 The ball was returning to the centre when OXBERRY fastened on to it and from 20 yards rapge easily beat the Nel son custodian with 8 delightful shot . Nelson applied pressure after this and Edleston tried a shot which found Walker well prepared . From the custodian's smart clearance the Shields left wing got away in promis ing style and from Bolam's centre Guyan caused Abbott sorne difficulty but he brought off a smart clearance . At the other end Robson cleverly stopped a dangerous rush and not long afterwards Eddleston was going through In great style when he was brought down by Hardy . The free - kick was easily cleared and then Matthewson made 8 great touch line run which he followed up with a perfect centre . which further endangered the home goal . Abbott , how ever , rushed out and made a fine clear ance . The South Shields forwards were always very forceful and were generally well on the target . NELSON'S NARROW ESCAPE . He was , for tunately , soon able to resume and twenty minutes after the resumption a penalty fell to the Shieldsmen . This was taken by CROWN . who added the Seasiders ' second point .
