South Shields made their last appearange t Horsley Hill , this season , when they aceived a visit from Bristol City this after ocn . Owing to the wet weather and the sual end of the season apathy there was a ery small attendance , not more than three 1ousand spectators being present at art , the smallest " gate " for many years . SHIELDS GOAL IN DANGER .
The Shields goal had a narrow escape ben Mays , receiving from Pocock's centre , ove in a shqt which Metcalf just managed divert for a corner which was easily dis sed of . The Shields defence was kept sily employed chiefly through the activi es of Nesbitt and Mays . Matthewson and
Smith . tried
it a different complexion upon e game but they met with no success and ere unable to make much headway . alker , in running out to get possession om Maye , let the ball slip through his nds , but fortunately for the 6ohfeldemen thing worse than a corner resulted .

Up to this stage the Beasiders had not en in the picture , and the visitors deserved . e lead which they gained after 13 minutes ay . The Shields defenders were tinker .

On two occasions Vallis had to run out to ve from Guyan , but with the exception of ese two incidents the visiting custodian never in any serious difcufty . atthewson , after dribbling well up , failed get in his centre with the inside iting in good position . While on the posite wing Thompson tried to send Guyan rough , but Hughes came to the rescue . It was a featureless gaine , play on both les . being exceedingly scrappy . SHIELDS OFFENSIVE .
The Shields forwards did a good deal of attacking towards the interval , but they invariably finished badly , and when Vallis was in any way menaged , he displayed fine judgment and coolness in all his work . Thompson , when well placed , was too hasty in making his shot , with the result that he was well off the mark , and the same player had another excellent chance , when after shouldering Guyan off the ball , he drove wide
of post .
