WEATHER AND THE CAMES . The weather prospects , as I write , are anihing but favourable and ground . staffs
been having an anxious time during the just few days . Snow and frost has played Jason with the pitches all over the country , and in spite of the fact that strenuous efforts Lave been made to put the grounds in as playable a condition as possible , there will few games that have not been riqusly affected by the state of the turf . 1 many instances , have no doubt , the het has gone to the teams , that have own the greater alaptability and adopted e right kind of tactics ,

RETURN TO FORM .
In their League gate with Leeds United at Horsley Hill last Saturdoy South Shields displayed the sort of form that will win matches , and it was aclcome inrprovement upon previous exhibitions . Without being Frilliant , the Seasidersresorted to businesslike and forceful methods and in eery depart ment of the team erted the mastery over er opponents . The Shieldsmen were frue to the reputation they have carned of giving the best account of themselves against most formidable opposition . It was in a moot that Leeds United found them 1 week and the Seasiders were able paster their first victory since Nov. 24th . LOST CHANCES .

While appreciating the importance of the Sealers ' suncess I cannot say that I was ather sqfisfied with the constitution of the attack ind if it had not been for the prodigious dabours of the intermediate men ad the defenders a very different result p.ht have been recorded . The forwards , ably apported by the men behind them , bad a bg share of the game , it is true and many ring chances came their way hit they would have done very much better if the wing men had been more dependable . the outstanding man of the afternoon , and a more polished dis play has not been witnessed at Horsley Hill since the departure of Warney Cresswell . In many respects he reminded me of Cresswell , and if he can maintain Saturday's form it will not be long before he secures for himself some of the dis Sunderland's famous defender . He gave a tinations that have been earned by faultless display against a forward line worthy of the greatest respect , and both in his clearances and " stopping work he displayed wonderful accuracy . 1 have never seen him play better . Ridley , in his somewhat unorthodox way , was also a sound and effective defender .
SHIELDSMEN'S RECORD .
In spite of the long list of failures since Nov. 24th South Shields still occupy a favour able position on the League chart , having acquired 25 points in 22 garnes . Stoke , the leaders of the Division have 30 points for 25 matches , while Derby County have secured 28 points out of a possible 48. The Seasiders , therefore , are not very far behind and they have several games in hand . Bury , Leeds United and Derby are the only Second League teams that have won more matches than the Shields men . Arrangements have boen made to play the postponed match with Port Vale at Hanley on Monday , Jan. 21st , and the abandoned game with Leeds United will be decided at Elland Road on Monday , February 25th . The Seasiders visit . Derby on Saturday and they will go direct to Hanley for their engagement on the fol lowing Monday .
