Second League . CRYSTAL PALACE v . SOUTH SHIELDS . South Shields were in the Metropolis this afternoon fulfilling their return engagement with Crystal Palace . In the corresponding game last season the teams played a draw of one goal cach . while at Horsley Hill last week the Palace were defeated by two clear goals . Both sides made a change in custo dianship , and the Palace played 3 new right wing . Palace . McCracken . Blakemore . Hoddinott , Morgan , Hard . South Shields . - Walker ; - Callendar ; Little , Cross ; Cracknell , Greener ; Harry , Crown , Rohson ; Wilson , Hardy , Hutchinson ; Matthewson . Smith , Hetherington , Oxberry , Bolam . Referee : Mr E. Shutt . STRIKE AFFECTS " GATE . " The attendance was seriously affected by the strike of ' bus and tram men and there would not be more than 8,000 present at the start . The opening play was confined to midfield , but eventually the visitors applied pressure and Oxberry had a fine chance but unfortunately he struck the ground when taking his shot from good position . www ● The Palace forwards then got busy , and Hoddinott gct through .. When challenged by Robson he passed to Blakemore , but the ball was too lively for the inside man to control and Hardy made a capital clearance . A few minutes later the South Shields centre half again distinguished himself by breaking up a dangerous movement by the Palace forwards led by Hoddinott . but Hardy's pass to his forwards was intercepted . HALVES PROMINENT . Both sets of half backs were at this stage controlling the game and the for wards failed to make any headway until Oxberry again got through on the Shields left wing . but he put the ball too far forward and Calendar was able to leave his goal and clear . An attack in the South Shields goal re sulted in a corner which nearly brought dis aster to the visitors , Wilson , in attempting to clear over his head , nearly put through his own goal , and only the alertness of Walker saved the situation . Oxherry was very successful in initiating forceful novements by the Shields forwards . After making a good opening the Shields in side left swung the hall across to the opposite wing , but it travelled too fast for Matthew . son to get possession . PALACE HARD PRESSED . Hetherington was slightly hurt through colliding with an opposing defender in at tempting to rush through . Another strong attack by the visitors placed the Palace de . fence in difficulties and Smith just failed to take the ball trom Oxberry's pass when well placed . Three Corners : fell to the Palace , all of which were successfully dealt with by the Shields defenders . Crown was respdnsible for some polished defensive work for the visitors . The Bouth Shields forwards were generally more forceful in their methods and were having a big share of the game but they were woefully weak in front of goal and some excellent chances were lost . Exciting scenes were witnessed in the Shields goalmouth when the ball was centred from the touch line and a goal seemed certain ... Robson , however , made a brilliant overhead clearance . The ball was sent in again and Walker left his goal to clear , ¡ Morgan had only to put the ball into an open goal , and this he endeavoured to do , but luckily for the visitors the ball rolled just alongside of the upright , and South Shields breathed again . GOAL FOR THE PALACE . Some really clever work by Matthewson . on the Shields right wing , got the ball well down and Smith drove in a great shot , but the strong wind diverted the ball against the side of the net . At the other end , Harry centred and Walker saved , but before he could throw the bal ! out of danger , BLAKEMORE scored .
