THE GAME .
When play opened there would not be nore than 5,000 or 6,000 present . The visitors vere the first to make headway , but a left ving effort by Herbert and Storey failed to materialise . A miskick by Lawrence at the ther end compelled Best to run out to clear rom Guyan , and Coventry then again pplied pressure through Dougall and Shea . An infringement , however , put an end to he movement , and when the Shields half rot possession , they made a strenuous ttempt to get their forwards working . Brown veut down on the left , but failed to keep control , while a few minutes later the same layer intercepted Randle's clearance and ndeayoured to send Thompson away .
Shields's attack , however , was well held , and most of the dangerous movements camo rom the opposition . The Shields goal , had rather narrow escape when Shea initiated
useful effort , and from Dcugall's " mid . ling " shot , Pynegar fleshed the ball across undefended goalmouth . Matthewson changed the soene of operations , and from his centre close up Brown hit the side of the
1et .

Play had been somewhat tame up to this point , and the most exciting incident in the arly stages was a thrilling raid on the Coventry goal following a fine kick well laced by Brown during which the referee vas slightly hurt . Hardy headed in with ne judgment .
REFEREE HURT .
The ball rebounded off Randle's legs . uyan then , drove in a hard shot which truck the referee in the face when Mr ndrews was standing a couple of feet rom the upright . The shot , it should be xplained , was wide of the mark . After eceiving attention he was able to resume Immediately afterwards .
Guyan and Thompson looked like getting hrough with the opposing defenders well eaten , but neither of them could get roper control , and Laurence eventually ffected a timely clearance . The Seasiders rere now doing most of the attacking , but he Coventry defence generally had the etter of the exchanges at close , quarters , nd Best was rarely menaced . A faulty ackle by Hutchinson enabled Shea and ougall to advance in promising atyle , but Crown came to the rescue ,
SHIELDS SCORE .
The Coventry forwards were now tak ng a lot of holding and the Shields backs were kept busy . It was a pleasant sur rise , therefore , when GUYAN gave South hields the lead after nineteen minutes lay . Going straight down practically insupported , Matthewson and Guyan shot hrough the opposing defence , and when he winger lobbed the ball forward to eat the oncoming back , Guyan took the all in his stride , and with a brilliant shot be an almost
rom what appeared to
mpossible angle , put the ball in the far orner of the net ..
Encouraged by this success , the . Sea iders maintained a lively pace , and the Coventry defenders were often in difficul ies . Smith and Matthewson provided . everal useful openings , and which tuyan tried hard to exploit , but Mac achlan had him well watched and when
e did get through , the back took a lot
f beating .
