BARNSLEY ENTERTAIN SOUTH
SHIELDS .
South Shields fulfilled a return Loague engagement with Barnsley at Onkwell this afternoon . The Yorkshiremen were re feated at Horsley Hill last week by two clear goals , and in the corresponding maten at Oak vell last secson the Seasiders suffered a heavy reverse by five clear goals .
The homo team was strengthe :: ed by the inclusion of Halliwell as jeader of the attack , while South Shields were also at full strength , Hardy returning to his place at ventre - half .
The teams were as follows :
South Shields - Walker ; Ridley , Crown ; Hird , Hardy . Hutchinson ; Bolam , Hether . ington . Simms , Greinwell , Brown .
Barnsley . -Cope ; Armstrong , Gitting ; Fletcher , Beaumont , Barnes : Curra 2 , Hine , Halliwell , Wairnecoat ,. Newton .
THE GAME .
The match was favoured with brilliant weather and there was a large crowd when the game started . Fletcher won
the toss and set the visitors to play against a stiff breeze with the sun at their backs .
South Shields were first to apply pres sure and Bolam , after making good pro gress , sent in a shot which Cope had 1.0 run out to save . Barnsley then got away on the right and , the ball went out to Newton . who entred to Halliwell .
The Barnsley leader netted the ball but he was in an offside position and no point was allowed . The home team continued to be aggressive and after some pretty passing by the forwards , in which Hine and Curran were prominent , the latter struck the corner of the post with a hard , fast shot .
South Shields made some headway after this but their attacks , as yet , were not so dangerous as those of the Barnsley for wards . Following a foul on Curran . Wainscoat headed against the corner of the post .
Brown broke away for the visitors and created a dangerous situation , but Arm strong came to the rescue and cleared in Ane style .
BARNSLEY SCORE .
After thirteen minutes play . WAINS COAT opened the scoring for Barnsley . Receiving from Newton he placed the ball into the far corner of the net , well out of Walker's reach .
Barnsley dominated the game and almost immediately they came within an ace of scoring . Halliwell next tried a long shot .
SHIELDS FORWARDS HELD .
The Shields forwards very rarely got going and when they did the Barnsley Brown and defence was wide awake . Greenwell made several attempts to get away but could make no progress . the Greenwell set Brown going and back to winger passed him . Things looked dangerous for Barnsley but Green and well collided with Armstrong the latter cleared whilst on the ground .
The visitors ' right wing returned to the attack and Cope had to punch out a fine entre from Brown . Hetherington beat Beau mont and went forward in a race for the all . Armstrong cleared the siauation , how . ever , with a tremendous kiek .
SHIELDS ATTACKS .
The visiting forwards were now showing . much more life but the home backs were playing a sound me . SIMMS made a glori . ous attempt to beat the defence and caused Cone to sae on his knees .
After this the ame lost much of its excite ment . Bolam made a good run and brought Cope to his knees with a shot that lacked sting .
Simms broke through an1 Gittins meeting relieved at the expense of a crrer . After some good work by Hutchinson and Brown , Hird secured possession and tried a long shot which went inches wide . From a corner Simms shot over the bar and later Cope bad te ruch ont to boot away from Hetherington . Half - time score : Barnsley

Tue Shi - limon lost the toss and lion : Guyan kicked off the attendance won'l te about three hou . The West Stanley left wing became 2:09 prominent . hrt Stothard repled them , art when the Shieldsmen teck nly into the visiting half Mur had to deal with a leng ahot from Matthewson .
Stanley zain forced the ray and Doulas hit the Shields upright . The hone for wards once more made headway , and when Oxterry shot across the oalmouth PARKER found the net for the open goal .
Corners fell to both sides and Richard son had to run out of his goal to save from Pinkney . Thompson ahot high over the visiting har , and then a minute later . when well placed , shot into the custo dian's hands .
The Stanley forwards were very keen , but at close quarters they shot weakly The Shieldamen procured two further corners , which gave them little advantage .
After half an hour's play a fine individ ual effort by Muse gave Purdy a good opportunity to equalise , but he shot gh over the bar . Nearing the interval the Shieldsmen pressed and Murray went full length to 6 & ve from Oxberry , whilst Hobson twice pulled the home centre up when he was getting dangerous .

On resuming play continued fairly even . and the home team in successive raids pressed st nely , Mathewson and Guyan oth testing Murray , whilet from a Stanley attack Richardson did well to 68 VO from Muse , for a while the visitors hell the upper band , and on ore occasion when Richardson ran out of his goal , Mues shot past

Thirty minutes after the restart OXBERRY dashed through and put on the Shieldsmen's second goal , whilst a few minutes later the Stanley goal had another narrow escape . Parker shooting for the custodian to go full length and save at the expense of a fruitless corner . Final score :
