12.000 SPECTATORS AT START .
When play commenced in showery weather
there was a crowd of about 12,000 spectators .
The visitors were the first to apply pressure , and a clever right wing movement , in which Osborne and Heard participated , left McKay in possession , but the Fulbam leader was neatly robbed by Hardy . A few minutes later an almost identical movement by the visiting right wing pair again placed McKay to advantage , and on this occasion Ridley dashed in an effected a clever save .
The visiting forwards were combining with prod effect , but they were generally well held the Shields defenders . faulty clearance by Fleming enabled Greenwell to put the ball across the gcalmouth to Simms , and the Shields centre placed it neatly to Hetherington , who flashed in s splendid shot which struck the side of the net .
After another brief spell of attacking by the visirs , during which the front line directed in enterprising fashion by McKay , Simms broke away and placed açourately to Belam , who raped off in promising e . but his shot was charged down by Chaplin .
REYNOLDS CALLED UPON . Combining smartly , the Shields forwards kept the opposing defence busily employed . and Reynolds was rather lucky to smother a close - up drive by Hetherington . Racing off on the left , Penn centred with fine judgment , and Crown had to put back to Walker , who cleared easily .
Simms made another attempt to break through in the centre , but lost the ball to Torrance , and this incident was followed by a cleverly executed movement on the part of Greenwell and Brown . The left winger's centre placed the Fulham goal in danger , Chaplin making a difficult clearance . 1
Once again the South Shields forwarde menaced the Fulham defence , but Chaplin and Fleming were not giving anything
away .
There was an exciting tussle in the visi tors ' goal area following a well placed centre by Brown , Chaplin eventually bring . ing relief to his side by making a partial clearance . Hetherington promptly pounced on the ball and there was a thrilling struggle within a few yards of Reynolds , the incident closing once again in favour of the defen ders .

A TERRIFIC PACE . The game was contested at 8 terri fic pare and neither side had very much to spare . although the South Shields forwards were the more effective and certainly had a crater number of scoring chances . The visitors had a great opening when Herd , receiving from the left had only Walker to beat close in , but by dilly - dallving he allowed the custodian to dispossess him . There were more thrills at the Fulham end , following a touch line raid by Brown . and Fleming was compelled to concede a

Younger volleyed in a centre right across the front of the goal and PRITCHARD took a first time shot , Richardson just reaching the ball with one hand to cannon it on to the upright and into the net .
Younger had a share in Blyth's second goal , which came a few minutes later . He put in a fine centre and SOULSBY met it and scored .
A misunderstanding by ' Blyth's right wing defenders gave PARKER an open ing which he seized upon to work the ball near goal and equalise . OXBERRY put Shields ahead three minutes from the interval from a penalty . Half - tima score :
