CLAPTON ORIENT v . SOUTH ' SHIELDS .
South Shields were in the Metropolis this fternoon opposing Clapton Orient on the Hillfelds Road ground . The teams had met on eight previous occasions under pague auspices , four of the games being For by the Seasiders and two by the Orient , while two of the matches resulted in a divi ion of the points .
The only occasion on which the North . rhers had been successful on the Clapton round was two seasons ago when they fin shed up the season by defeating the Orient by the only goal of the match . In the ooT responding game last season the teams played a goalless draw .
It will be recalled that it was in the Sea iders ' first match at Clapton on Sept. 27th , 1919 , that George Keenlyside Bustained a ' ractured leg and on that occasion the Shieldsmen were defeated by four clear roals .

THE GAME .
The visit of the Second League leaders proved a big attraction and 25,000 spectators were present at the start , the weather being ine .
South Shields won the toes , and the home men were the first to attack , but Hird put a stop to a promising movement with a fine Lackle . The Orient forwards again
came
away in great style and Walker gathered the ball and cleared smartly .
Then the visitors engaged in a vigorous attack , but failed to make much progress before Greenwell lost the ball to Dixon .

Orient again applied pressure and after being awarded a free - kick close in Rennox was just a trifle high with his shot . South Shileds forwards , led by Simms , got and Greenwell was all but th.ough when he collided violently with Rosire , both players being temporarily rendered hors de

combat .
SHIELDS HARD PRESSED .
Hird was prominent with a delightful individual movement which nullified
an
Orient attack but soon afterwards the home forwards engaged in a long and sustained attack , the ball passing out to each forward in turn and each man having time to part with it to the best advanage .
But when Hutchinson came to the rescue he was able to clear in fine style , and this enabled the Shieldemen to apply pressure but the , were quickly forced back . The Bea siders were eventually awarded a free - kick

just outside the penalty area and Hardy sent in a terrific shot which Wood was lucky to
ip over the bar for an abortive corner .

Play was then transferred to the other end where Crown took a risk in putting the ball back to Walker , and a corner resulted . Exciting scenes were witnessed in Shields goulmouth where the ball bobbed about in front . of Walker , reveral attempts to head into the net being narrowly frus . trated by the defenders .

Eventuaily Crown managed to reliev the pressure . but the Orient forwards soon re turned to the attack , and the Shields de fence was given a gruelling time .

The home forwards were doing most of the attacking , but they were very wild in their shooting . Crown did his best with a long pass , to get Brown away . but the opposing back saved the situa tion and Smith careered down the home right wing , beating Crown with difficulty before sending in to . Green , who was
smartly checked by Hardy .
Hereabouts a lull occurred in the game
and midfield play , was the order , until
Green , in the home centre , got through .
