The weather was beautifully fine , and there was a crowd of about 8,000 at the start . South Shields faced a glaring sun in the first half , but they had the wind at their backs . In less than a minute the Seasiders had obtained the lead . The ball was worked up on the left , and when Thompson put . into the centre , Davidson rushed out to clear , but SMITH who was waiting in readiness , promptly pounced on the ball and neatly lobbed it over the custodian's head into the net . Immediately afterwards Guyan came away in the centre , and Smith was left with another excellent opening , but on this occasion he was a few inches wide with a great shot . Taylor raced off in promising style , and after covering half the length , of the ground . forced a corner off Wilson which was easil cleared . Once again the South Shields forwards got going in vigorous fashion , Guyan and Smith being conspieuous for a smart combined effort , the outcome of which was a terrific drive by the inside man which missed the Crossbar by & foot . SMITH'S EFFORTS . Smith was a busy marksman , and he was responsible for several well directed shots in the early stages of the game . A free kick to Shields in a good position was well placed , but L. Williams came to the rescue and headed clear . Play up to this point had been confined chiefly to the visitor's half and Williams and Blenkinsop had some awk ward situations to deal with . The South Shields forwards were in a merry niood , their passing and finishing work showing marked improvement on previous displays Wilson , the visiting centre - half , displayed ine judgment , fruetrating an attempt by Juyan and Thompson to break through , and rom his clearance Walker initiated a useful movement in which Taylor and Harron par ticipated . This placed the Shields defence in some difficulty , but Crown eventually dis possessed the Wednesday left winger with a neat tackle . Taylor and Binke made good progress for the visitors , only to be effec tively pulled up through the intervention of Hardy , and when Bolam would have made his presence felt , the referee pulled him up for an offside infringement . Wilson was a great worker in the Wednes . day intermediate line , while his colleagues t . this department showed great keenness in their breaking up efforts . By tricky foot . work R. Williams advanced on the visitors ' fight wing and centred accurately but Robson cleared decisively . Bolam was fouled when going off on his own , and his injury necessi tated a brief stonpage . From the free kick , à desperate struggle ensued in the visitors ' goalmouth , where shot after shot was charged down , and the Shieldsmen in their eagerness got iu one another's way . The incident culminated with a fast cross shot by Bolam which was well off the mark . R. Williams and Walker were prominent for the visitors , but they lacked finishing power . Davidson brought off a delightful save from Matthewson , and when the ball came out to Smith in good position , he lifted it over the posts . There was another dangerous attack by the Shields right wing which Wilson success fully disrosed of , and soon afterwards a corner fell to the Seasiders on the left Wilson made valiant efforts to get the Wednesday forwards moving , but the South Shields half - backs were on their best behaviour and generally kept a tight hold on the invaders .. After Davidson had dealt with a long shot by Smith , Harren esme away on the left and 11 L Fr. SHIELDS ( ROCTBALL GAZETTEV SATURDAY , MARCH 29TH , 1924 |
