Referee : Mr T. Tomlinson , of Sheffield . Rain fell heavily throughout the morning but shortly before the start there was welcome improvement in the weather . The ground was in fairly good condition and when proceedings opened the crowd num . bered about 10,000 . The Orient left wing pair , Williams and Rennox , were early con . spicuous for a smartly executed movement which necessitated the intervention of both Ridley and Crown .
EARLY GOAL FOR OLAPTON .
It was with difficulty that the Shields defenders cleared a dangerous situation , and when the ball eventually came out to mid field , Brown made some progress for bouth Shields on the left . Following up sniartly Greenwell went right through , but he spoilt the effort by a faulty centre .
The game was only five minutes old whon Clapton obtained the lead . Smith forced a corner and placed accurately for GREEN to shoot through a crowd of players into the net . Walker being unsighted at the time .
The Seasidere made a vigorous response chiefly through clever work on the left wing but Brown's centre was wasted . Williams was again prominent for the visitors with a smart solo effort , but Crown ene a clever tackle after Ridley had been outmanoeuvred . Brown was responsible for a brilliant touch line raid which he finished up with a power ful drive which missed the far upright by a few inches . The visitors were monopolising a good deal of the play , Williams and Smith being especially prominent on the respective wings .
The Orient goal had an exceedingly narrow escape when Smith sent Simms away , and the South Shields leader , beating Rosier , flashed in a higheshot which passed over the bar with a foot to spare . Hutchinson stopped a dangerous movement by Smith and Waite , and from his clearance Simms and Green well looked like making headway until Townrow upset their calculations . For the next few minutes South Shields applied per . sistent pressure only to And Rosier and Mackechnie always on the alert .
POOR FINISHING WORK .
Play never reached a very high order , and most disappointing feature was the lack finishing pov cr dicplayed by both teans . ms imissed the upright by a foot when a well - timod centre from Belam left him weil placed , and a few minutes later , the South Shields leader after cleverly forcing his way through , again missed the opening .
The South Shields forwards vcre guilty numerous blanders , and

excellent chances wele wasted through wretched shooting . On one occasion the ball bouncing about the visitor's goalmouth in tantalizing fashion with none of the home forwards able to get possession , and when eventually Hutchinson dashed up he seit the ball yards wide of the posts .
