Second League . OLDHAM ATHLETIC v . SOUTH SHIELDS . Scuth Shielda visited Oldham this after . ncon , this being the first coqasion ou which the teams hate net in opposition . Athletic were immediately away through the edinm of Howson und Hargreaves and Riley , in trying 10 effect a clearance handled the ball alose to the penalty line . Front the free kick which followod Wynn sent , inches wide . The visitors then made a . spasmodic rush to the other end and the home goal was in sovo danger . but the South Shields for wards could not improvo upon their good midfield work . Scven minutes after the start Douglas was , pretented with.n great change to score when he got the ball from Howson , and after brating all opposition he shot hope .. lessly wilc . Athletic returned to the attack and Pilkington brought Walker to his knecą with a long shot . GREENWELL'8 FINE EFFO TS . # Watson dropped in a splendid centre which resulted in an exciting tusule in the hemo goal , and Douglas and Pilkington both made unsuccessful attempts to peno . tiate the defence . After seventeen minutes ' play Greenwell looked a certain scorer for South Shields . Breaking through on his own the Shields insido left was only ten yards out when with only the custodian to beat he sent in a hard shot which Matthews saved in bril . liant fashion . It was a narrow escape for Oldham Apparently , this was only a " flash in the pan , " for south Shields and Athletic were Soon again attacking and several excellent . seering chanes were missed . On one occasion Douglas and Horrocks worked their way up 10 the visitors ' goal , and cut the hall heroes to Watson , who looked a certain scorer . But the home for ward orci azain hungled the chance . The Oldham forward , although , disappointing in front of goal , were showing inarked superior ity to the visitors and the South Shields defenders wera kept busily employed . CLEVER SHIELDS DEFENDERS . Athletic maintained their pressure , and the wind , which had grown almost to # gala , being in their favour , gave them a big advantage . Attacking frequently on both wings , the home mien drove in shot after shot , but the South Shields defenders were playing 1emarkably good football , and with the odds dead against them , they managed to prevent the Athletic forwards from cul minating good midfield play . Several times , in quick succession . Ath . letin forced corners , but Douglas placed the ball behind through not allowing suflici . ently for the strong wind . Stothard lost the tosad the visitors had a decided advantage when they seomred the Assistance of the wind in the opening The early exchanges , however , were fairly even . and following two fruitless corners to the Shieldamen . Dovann charged 8 clear . ance down hy the Shields ' back , but Rich ardson saved . After about ten minuten play Jamhert and Brown broke through and the lant named forced another corner off Forrest . Oxbarry and Parker com . bined well and when the winger middled the ball , Henderson handled , and a free kick was awarded the visitors .. Melia next pathered a long shot from Parker , and when Jarrow returned to the attack , Barnett and Campbell hoth failed when glorious chances prevailed . Twonty five minutes from the start after AMMO strong plav hy the Shields ' left wing , HENDERSON shot into the net for the Sea siders ' opening goal . A long shot from MoCord . went wide of the home goal and a minute later Richardson made a great clearance from Dowson , who shot from well inside the penalty arен . Ten minutes before the Interval LAMBERT registered the Shieldsmen's second goal . The Jarrow forwards improved after the Becond reverse and following 2 fine forward movement FRASER found himself pre sented with an open goal and he had no difficulty in reducing the lead . Jarrow again attacked and Richardson Was cheered for two magnificent Baves , the first from Campbell and the second from Barnett . Half - time acore : South Shields Reserves Jarrow breeze , they kept the Jarrow carly strong defence busily employed . Oxberry on one ocen slon missed an open goal and then Parker grazed the bar with a cross shot . Mid way through the half from a pass by Brown Parker shot and although Mella saved LAMBERT scured possession and added the home teama bird goal .
