South Shields had Stockport County as their opponents at Horsley Hill his after When the teams met at Edgley Park last week the game had to be aband from the end oned twenty - five minutes cwing : o & snowstorm and the soons were then level . The corresponding game at South Shields last season resulted in a vic tory for the Seasiders by three clear goals . The eams were as follow's. South Shields . - Walker ; Ridley , Crown ; Tilon , Hardy , Hatchinson ; Bolam , Heth crington , Simme , Greenwell , Parker | Stockport County . - Hardy Reid , Wilson ; Waterall , Cockburu , Morrison ; Critchley , Purcell , Woodcock , Sambrook , Edglev / Referee Mr. P. V. Johnson . of Sheffield . The weather was delightfully fine , but there would not be more than 6,000 specta tors when the teams turned out . The ground was frost - bound , but under the influence of bright sunshine there were indications that it would prove to be on the heavy side .
Hutchinson was successful with the toss and the visitors faced the sun in the opening half . Two free - kicks in quick succession enabled South Shields to apply pressure.in the first few minutes .

The County goal had a narrow escape when Bolam placed splendidly from . A corner . and Hardy headed on to the cross bar . Wilson distinguished himself with some effective stopping wok when Edgley and Sambrook were shaping wo'l , while a few minutes later Hardy , the South Shields centre - half , put a slop 10 a promising movement by the Stockport inside men .
When play had been in progress about ! six een minutes the Shieldemien missed a great chance to take the lead . Simms put the ball forward to Greenwell who ought to have scored easily with a first time shot but he preferred to ry and work for a better position and his hesitancy proved his undo'ng .

He dropped the ball after stopping it , but there was no opponent near at the time and he was able to con lete his clearance . The Seasiders continued to attack persistently and the Stockport custodian brought off brilliant clearances from Greenwell and Sitmins .

Parker put in a fast centre from which Hetherington made an abortive attempt to Set in a first time shot , and when the ball went out to Bolan the Shields right winger was yards wide . Critchley looked like making progress for the visitors , but an off sido infringenient nullified his efforts , and at the other end , following a throw in by Wilson , Simms was only inches wide with a capital drive .
Waterall gave his right wing possession , and Critchley swung the ball out to the opposite wing , where Ridley brought off a great clearance against Elgley ..
There were some exciting exchanges in the visitors ' half following a spirited raid hy Parker . From the left winger's centre Bolem when splendidly placed missed the cross - bar by inches and from a flag kick which followed Hetherington headed wide from an equally favourable position .
Greenwell and Parker were prominent for a useful combined effort which again placed As the interval approached the Stockport the visitors ' goal in danger , but Reld came forwards led in enterprising fashion by to the rescue and cleared decisively . A Wondeeck anplving considerable pressure cleverly executed movemen , in which Wil- and Ridley and Crown were often hard put son , Bolam , and Simms participated put to it to keep them out . the Stockport defenders in difficulties bu . the South Shields leader was unable to get on in the target .
The Scoth Shields hacks . however , gave a sound display and Walker was rarely troubled . Parker was going through in great atvle when he was brought down in a heavy charge just outside the penalty area .
A miskick by Ridley might have proved sastrous for the Shieldsmen had not Hardy rushed across to the assistance of his bark , just as Purcell was getting into shooting position .
Emms tried another long shot which was too high and after Hutchinson and Crown har frustrated an effort by the Stockport righ : wing pair Hetherington broke away and put the ball across to the loft .
A NEAR THING ..
Hutchinson from the touch line lobbed the ball into the goalmouth , and it looked as if it was going into the corner of the net when Hardy smartly jumped for it and spoped it out .
The hone , men were having practically all the game , but at close quarters their luck deserted them . The South Shields goal was seriously menaced for the first time after 25 minutes ' play . rced their way Edgley and Eambrook through and Walker in making a save from the latter slipped and fell in the goalmouth , but he quickly pounced upon the ball , hrw . ever , and although slightly injured in the tussle held on to it until he was able to throw it clear ...
Cockburn took a free kick for the visitors not far from the penalty line and put the hall forward for mbrook to rush in but the County inside left was ch ged off the hall hy Ridley , before he could do any amage . During another attack by the shortly afterwards Walker fistci out a she by Critchley .

The Shields left winger was conspicuous for elever footwork and speedy touch line raids . The Storknori CO had ancier narrow escane when reenwell only a tow yards out put the ball to Simms whose shot was charred down by Wilson .
