South Shields visited Southampton this afternoon with considerably weakened Laam . In the absence of . Simms the leader hip was entrusted to Hetherington , and in he half - back line Metcalfe appeared in place of Hutchinson , who is on the sick list . The weather was fine but the going was heavy . There were about 10.000 spec

tators at the start . The opening exchanges were brisk , South Shields being the first to apply pressure . The Southampton defence difficulties when Parker was given off side , and at the other end there was some smart combination by the " Saints " which Shelley took a prominent part . Both sets of forwards found the opposing half - backs too strong for them . Clever work by Dominy and Henderson sent Southampton away in promising style . kawlings , in attempting to get through , lound himself cornered before he could do any damage , and he transferred to Pearsor , who shot wide , while Walker made a dive or the post .

The Shieldsmicn retaliated and Bolam fin shed up a fine touch line run by putting the ball across an undefended goalmout put two of the insido men missed the ball iltogether and a great chance was lost .
Soon afterwards Parker shot weakly from Afavourable position , and Shelley , who was standing close in , easily cleared .
During an attack upon the Shielde goal , Dominy netted the ball from a centre by Carr , but the referee disallowed the point for an offsido infringement . For some time after this the visitors applied vigorous pres sure , but the " Saints " were we served by heir defender .

Shields had to defend frequently to keep he lively home forwards out . Rawlings neaded into Walker's hands from 8 fine centne by Carr . Henderson raced through he defence , but he put too much strength . into his shot , -
