Second League Football . SOUTH SHIELDS AT HOME 10 NELSON . ( By " WANDERER . " ) Nelson paid their first visit to Se Shields this aftern to fulfil their r League engagement with the Seas When the teams met at Nelson last wee the Shieldsmen disposed of the Laras tians by two clen goals , South Shields made one change in ei team , Crown resuming at left back to the exclusion of Robson , while the viss made several alterations . The teams were as follows : South Shields . Walker : Ridley . Wilson Hardy . Metcalfe : Matthewsonih , Guvan , Oxberry . Bolam . Nelson . Nutter ; Liley . Rigg : Newnes , Braidwood . Collins : Hoad , Eddleston . Ken nedy . Roseboom , Humphrey . Referee - Mr P. B. Johnston , of The light was bad and the visitors had the advantage of a strong ress wind in the opening half . There was a " gate " of alont 8,000 when play commenced . A faulty clearance by Ridley early in the game left Eddleston in possession , but the Neison inside right fniled to keep courel and the danger was averted . Gavan wa fouled in midfield but the free kick was of no assistance to the Seasiders , and by smar : dombined work the Nelson richt , wine pair rame away in great style . They finished badly , however , and Crown made a nest clearance 4 sparkling solo effort ty Gvan ondan . gered the Nolson goal for the first time , bat after the Shields leader had beaten his firs wo men he put the ball too far forward and Lilley jusi managed to get it away FORWARDS LACK COHESICN . ! The Seasiders continued to force the pace , hut in the early stages of the gathere was ittle cohesion among the forwards , and the players were finding it difficu : toro ively ball . Following a flap kick b Matthewson there was an exciting sl he visitors ' goalmouth , and when : ventually went out to Guyan , the Sh eader flashed in a great first time shes which missed by inches . Play continued to be somewhat scrappy . nd there were few outstanding incidents . Wilson tried to get his right wing away . bu : imith falled to trap the ball , and the visitors eplied with a promising combined ' rove . nent in which Eddleston and Hoad partici ated . The outcome of this was a corner which was easily dealt with , but the vis oon returned to the attack in vigorous ashion , and Ridiey and Crown were often n a tight corner . Taking advantage of the mis - kick bs illey , Bolam cut in and raced for goal , but Tutter , who is a Nelson amateur rushed out > meet him and brought off a clever clear . Not long afterwards the custodian . ollided with Smith when the latter was ning through , and both fell heavily to the : round .. the outocme of the incident being flag kick . South Shields had a chance nce . 1 hen they awarded a free - kick a few inches rom the penalty line , but Crown's shot was ride . Nutter brought off two smart clear .. nces in quick succession , and in a few inutes later fisted away when Bolam laced accurately from a corner . It was a eatureless game both sides being appar . ntly harassed by the troublesome wind . VISITOR'S NARROW ESCAPE . The visitors goal had an exceedingly narrow escape when Bolam drove in a hare hot which the custodian stopped but failed n hold , and the ball fell against the foot , f the upright and rebounded into play .. The South Shields forwards were orceful in their methols , and their nigh ng work was disappointing Braidwood niskicked in attempting to divert a ree ick taken by Orown but Rigs covered the alf - back smartly and cased the situation Delightful combination by the visiting for ards left the Shields defenders standing . nd it was lucky for the honie mon tut Kennedy with the goal at his merry failed tr et his font to the ball before it relled out of lay . 15 i ' There were brief stoppspes while Wilson nd Matthewson neceived attention for njuries .
