SEVEN THOUS D SPECTATORS .
Seven thousand spectators witnessesd the start . The visitors at once made their pres . ence felt through their righ : wing pair..elly and T. Broad , and when Hutchinson was in difficulties , Crown dashed across and made a good clearance . Brown and Oxberry then mado an attempt to get going , but when the ball went across to Hetherington the Shields leader was sinartly checked by MeGrory .
South Shields forwards quickly returned to the attack , and Oxberry put the ball forward for Hetherington to go through . Beating his first man , the Shields leader gave Smith pos session , but the Shields inside right was well off the mark with his shot . Smith later swung the hall out to Matthewson in delightful style . The winger tried a long shot which was a yard wide of the upright .
Tempest and Roxburgh miated a promis . ing movement , which caused Wilson and Crown some trouble . and after the ball had been centred accurately , Hardy effected a sound clearance . Receiving from Hutchin son's wing pass . Smith made an unsuccess . ful attempt to break through , but he was cleverly dispossessed by Rouse on the penalty line . The game , though not fast , was keenly contestąd , but at no time during the early stages were the services of the custodians requisitioned .
J. Broad led a vigorous attack upon the Shields defence , but when within shooting distance the effort was easily frustrated through the timely intervention of Hardy . An excellent chance came to the Seasiders when a free kick was awarded a few yards from the penalty area . Wilson placed well , but was just a trifle too strong to enable Oxberry to put on the finishing touches . HETHERINGTON STOPPED . Hetherington was twice fouled when going through , and these incidents had the effect of rousing the Shieldsmen to increased effort . The visitors ' however , were splendidly served by their intermedir men , and shoot ing opportunities were very rare . Crown stopped a dangerous rush by Tempest and Roxburgh , and from his cl arance , Matthew .
