www 45 * By DICK KIRKUP ( Shields Gazette ) This Is Greatness LONG before I graduated to playing football on an actual pitch , I played in " Back Lane Internationals " as a soccer - crazy kid in Newcastle . During the school holidays - and also every night During after a rushed tea - all the youngsters in our neighbourhood who fancied themselves at football gathered in that sacred back lane of ours of St. James's Park ; but to us , that back lane was Wembley itself . Before we kicked - off , we each assumed the identity of our favourite footballer .. .. and every ruddy time we played we had that same old trouble EVERYBODY WANTED TO was literally in the shadow which BE STANLEY MATTHEWS ! we Half an hour was spent sorting that one out , and it was usually the biggest in our group who " won " . That was how we felt about the man have the privilege of seeing tonight . Yes , Sir Stanley Matthews , C.B.E. although I have never met him I know him very well indeed , as do all of us . His career is a catalogue of magnifi cence in which the world has always been at his twinkling , educated feet . Yet not once did he kick the world around or treat it with disdain . No , indeed . The world may have been his kingdom - but in his humility he always considered himself its servant . Over the years on his world travels , millions of people of all Races and continued on page 4 LEFT , SIR STANLEY , then 49 , and back at Stoke starting City's great revival , shows a clean and educated pair of heels to a bewildered defender . Two internationals who appear tonight . Above Port Vale player - manager and in side right Jackie Mudie , capped 17 times for Scotland , and ( below ) former Norwich and Everton inside forward Jimmy Hill , the Irish inter national . |
