And it all started 51 years ago when Sir Stanley was born at Hanley . A shy youngster his shyness has still not left him completely he eventually signed for his local club , Stoke City , in 1931. But a couple of years before that , he was most certainly not the dazzling winger we came to know . He was , in fact , a centre half and was capped by England Schoolboys in that position in 1929. But his brilliant individualism was not to the liking of one particular England selector who was reported as saying : " I never want to see that boy Matthews on a football field again . " It is true that Stan played in only that one schoolboy international , against Wales , but in later years , when he made his name as a professional player , he had no more enthusiastic admirer than that irate selector . So he joined Stoke at the age of 17 - and only two years later he won his first senior England cap to begin a career of 22 years as an inter national . He became the " King " of the Potteries . . . and when , in May , 1947 , he was transferred to Blackpool for £ 11,500 , there was an outcry among Stoke supporters .
