SHIELDS SATURDAY , FOOTBALL MARCH 14 By sacrificing six points in three succes . Five games , South Shields have almost ruined their chances of promotion . It is true that on each occasion they were defea ted by the narrowest of margins , and as matter of fact were distinctly unlucky to le at all , but the t remains that the points have been lost , and the consistently god form displayed by some of the leading teams of the Division does not improve the outlook s far as the Seasiders are con werned . The game at Horsley Hill last Sat urday was most disappojting affair , and Hull were a luckiest team.in the world to act awah the " speils . " It was the oui Fiory pod finishing work and faulty markamanship . Numerous scoring chances were presented to them , but they failed to rake much impression in front of goal , and their best efforts were frustrated by the splendid the other hand , were quick to lake full advantage of the first opportunity that came their way , and having once estab hshed the lead they were careful to retain it by the application of effective defensive The " Tigers , " todianship of Mercer . measures . Need for Changes in Attack , GAZETTEN 4 1924 I did not expect the Seasiders to beat Leeds United on Wednesday , but realising that they invariably put up a strong fight when they are up against formidable opposi tion , I was not without hope that they would bring one point back with them . They gave the league leaders an exceedingly close game , and I am pleased to note that there was a distinct improvement compared with their exhibition against Hull . But it has toen plainly apparent . the light of recent experiences , that the fnside positions will have to be strengthened . The wing , men were again the most prominent workers in the Shields attack and their olever touch line raids were a feature of the game . Y FINISHING FAULTS . 2-4 " Matthewson and Bolam were easily the best of the South Shields forwards , and If they had received the support they deserved from the inside men there would not have been very much to complain about . But their colleagues in the attack were not good opportunists and Guyan , Smith and Oxberry were all guilty of bad blunders when splendidly placed . The team work was : scrappy and dis Jointed , the intermediate men being hope A NOTABLE ABSENTEE . lessly erratio in their purveying efforts It was a great misfortune to South Shields and not very convincing in defence . when ureenwell got himself " crocked , " for Hardy was distinctly off his form and a like Hetherington , he had shown remark more enterprising leader than Havelockably good form in the earlier part of the would have had many opportunities of season , and he was responsible for seven goals making his presence felt . When Greenwell and Shields defence was undoubtedly weak- ctherington were filling the inside posi ened by the absence of Ridley , who was tion's there was a certain " liveliness " hous down with influenza , and if he had been the South Shields attack which is now con : playing I do not suppose that Hull would spicuous by its absence . At the same time , Metoalfé was not free from plame . Harry Wilson forward fine , and since they have been with was the most reliable of a poor trio . , drawn from the team there has been a unticeable depreciation in the effectiveness of the attack . Greenwell was hurt on Jan. 5th , and his next appearance was with the 16th , when , unfortunately , his leg again Reserves against Preston Colliery on Feb. gave way , tecessitating his retirement His return to the side would be a great acquisi tion . May it bor soon ! I am glad to see that , Hutchinson the South Salelds captain , has been restorl to his of position after an absence of about ten weeks through ill ness : When he gets back to his game he will have a big influence upon a department of the team that has not been giving ' satis faction for , some time . PRECIOUS POINTS . THE CLAIMS OF HETHERINGTON . Hetherington has not been reinstated in I have been at a loss to understand why Second League toam especially in view of the weeks . He has only had one game with the failure of the attack dpring the past few senior eleven since he happenedes accident injured list for several weeks . He turned out on Dec. 22nd , although he has been off the regularly in the opening matches of the season , and the fact that he has half - a - dozen League goals to his credit is , in itself , suffici ent justification for his inclusion in the irrefutable . He is arr.enterprising , resource . team . Hetherington's claim to recognition is ful player , always keen to make and exploit his openings and his keen and forcefultac . ties are such as to provide those necessary finishing touches which often win matches . He has already proved his ability to get goals . In consequence of an injury , to Guyan he was called upon to lead the attack in the important game at Hull this after 11000 . the Hull City and Leicester City are the mly clubs that have registered a double success against the Seasiders this season . Leicester defeated the Shieldsmen by 4-1 at Leicester , and in the return match at Horsley Hill they . secured the verdict by the odd goal in ' three , while Hull won by only goal of the match when the teams met at Anlaby Road . South Shields have lost three games at Horsley Hill this season , the successful teams being Leicester Southampton and Hull while Clapton Orient and Port Vale have each ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS . taken a home point .
