Untess Sonth Shields can regain that con Bisericy and confidence which characteri sed their performances during the first three months of the season , their chauces of promotion will quickly disappear . In pite of recent reverses their present posi on on the League chart is by no hopeless one as they have two games in hand compared with most of the more fav . rably placed clubs but it is far from atisfactory and having fallen into arrears to such an extent they will find it a fairly sul proposition to re - establish themselves among the leaders of the Division . The wees are shipping past , and for some time now the Seasiders have been gradually drop ping down the table . They in ust pull themselves together and that quickly . The loss of nine points in five consecutive anies requires a good deal of explanation . POINTS SCARCE . was December has been a disastrous month for the Shieldsmen . They started with a heavy defeat at Leicester on December 1st and the following week they surrendered two miore points to the same club at 11ors ley Hill this being the first home defeat of the season . Weighing over 11 st . and standing 51. 9 inches in height , Stan mard possesses all the attributes of a suc ogful leader . . 1 South Shields Iteserves had a great time on Boxing Day , and so had we spectators ! It seemned almost meredible that any North . Kasten League team could be capable of administering to a side of the cahore of Newcast such an gnomous defeat , and the Seasiders ' performance must rank with the best achievements of the season . " The deplorable ground conditions heid no terrors for the Seasuren , in fact , they eened to ravel in them , and it was Lecause they showed the greater adaptibility that they proved themselves so completely the masters of the situation . They simply romped home , and the raped scor.ag of the forwards caused the crow great delight . Thoi.p on and Oxberry both accomplished the hat trick , " the former being responsile for no fewer than four of the total crop of nine goals , while the other two were obtened by Mat thewson , who gave a sparkling display in the wing . Netriy Len years Bellett severed his connection Wuh South sindds and none of his former colleagues vil appear a dost om on Tues day . Of these , George Kelde was the Jast to yo . Those who are desirous of witnessing the match would , therefore , be well advised to com municate with the South Shields manage at Horsley Hill , or the passenger depart ment at the South Shields Rallway Station ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS , Sunderland Supporter : In the season The decision of the South Shields directors place Erie S mus on the open to - transfer list came as a tog surprise to the club's 21 at Roker Park , an 1:30 at Gedison Park supporters .
