to show them where the net was , it had not been for him , I do not think Seasiders would have scored at all . an hour and a quarter , the Shieldsmen ndeavouring to get the isill past the net , but roceiving 110 ) euragement , they appeared to have re themselves to the sacrifice of a pre cious i one point when Collins showed them how was done . That settled the issue Guyan goal was the result of delightful qism , while Crown showed his usual fine julgment in converting the penalty . As I alrea , remarked in my comments e the game , South Shields were the better two poor teams , but they were flattered the score . Seldom have the Seasiders fac duch a lifeless exhibition . MISTAKEN TACTICS . There was very little method or science on ethereude and the most prominent workers were the defenders . The South Shields for wards were a disappointing lot , and they just panaged to save their reputation by their sendid rally in the closing stages of the encounter in which the wing men , Matthew M and Bolam . played a conspicuous part . Ip to this point they failed to adapt them selves to the playing conditions , holding the all too closely and neglecting their oppor unities to open out the game . One is bound to admit that the boisterous wind which troubled the players during the greater part of the game rendered accurate control exceedingly difficult , but the handi operated just as harshly upon the defenders as upon the attack , and the South Shields forwards lost . numerous chances through lack of enterprise at close quarters and faulty midfield combination . The inside men , Oxberry and Smith , were never con : vincing , the latter being guilty of his old failing in preferring the company of the half - backs to that of the forwards . There is a harder worker on the South Shields am than Jack Smith , but much of his ergy is misapplied for while he is playing the " extra half " stunt he is throwing the foward line out of joint .

CROWN'S RECORD . Laurie Crown looks like setting up record as a free - kick artist . He has four als to his credit this season , three of which were obtained in League matches aid one in the English Cuptie at Burnley while in addition he scored a goal while play ng for the Reserves against Carlisle United on February 2nd . His record is Interesting from another point of view . He has scored in each of the last five games in which he has taken part , an unusual hjevement for a full - back . On Jan. 5th , Against Leeds United , he scored from a fre kick just outside the penalty area , the filowing week at Burnley he did precisely t same thing and at Derby on Jan 19th . scored from a penalty . An attack of nenza prevented him turning out again til Feb. 2nd when he was given an outing with the Reserves and scored from a penalty while last week against Nelson , he converted another " spot " kick . AN EVENTFUL SEASON . Looking up some old records the other day I came across some interesting parti ulars relating to the eventful season of 1913 14 , when South Shields , under the player mana gership of Arthur Bridgeti , carrai ! Letore them in the North - Eastern league . They won the championship of the League with 69 points out of possible 76 , having lost only one match during the whole season , while they scoged no fewer than 133 goals . record for the North Eastern League was estalished by Newcastle Reserves in 1909 10 .. when they scord 134. Leading the South Shields attack during the reason referred 10 . Irvine Thornley contributed the remarkable total of 49 goals and Arthur Bridgett was responsible for 24. In addition to winning the hampionship of the North Eastern League South Shields won the Durham Senior Cup , the Ingham Infirmary Cup , the Tynemouth Dispensary Cup , the Tyneside Challenge Shield , and the Tyneside League Championship Cup . They also reached the first roqnd proper of the English Cup com petition and were beaten at Burnley ( win ners of the trophy by three goals to one . THEIR WINNING WAY .
Though reluctant to encroach upon the preserves of my old friend " T. W. B , " I cannot refrain from inaking a passing refer . ence to the remarkable form shown by the Reserves . They continue to head the North Eastern League with 44 points out of a maximum of 52 , having scored 79 goals gainst 22. They have not lost a League match since November 24th , when they were defeated at Middlesbrough , and with the exception of their Durhan Cup tie at Shilon , in which they were defeated by the only goal scored , they have won every game since December 1st . It might well be said that with such apable men in reserve there is no excuse for any weak spot on the Second League team . Keen competition for places acts as an excellens ionic .
ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS , " Soccerite " -Your letter has been randed to me . With most of your suggestions I am in entire agreement . I have expressed similar views on more than one occasion .
