LUKATU the prospects of the future as bright and hopeful . 72 Amongst the fresh talent are C. J Pearson , a capable custodia from Derby County . who had previously been with Liverpool for three seasons ; A. U. Thomas , wing forward , right or left , from Hull City , who formerly played for Crook as an amateur : W. Thirlaway , outside forward , who is at home ou either wing , and has acen service with West Tams , Southend , and Luton ; and W. Smutn insido right , who has had experience with Tottenham . The last - named is a brother of Jack Smith , one of the must popular front liners in the Shields club . Mr J. W. Tinn , the manager , it is stated , is in negotiation for other promising men . PLAYERS ' SPORTING ACTIVITIES . The players are at present in training , and as a variation to their football work , they are engaging in cricket and bowls matches , several of which will take place during the next fortnight . Their annual bowling match with the Borough Bowling Club will be held in the Marine Park on August 27th , and after it the players will be entertained to tea by the directos , and the medals won by the Shieldsman in the final tio with Sunderland for the Durban Professional Cup will be presented . cricket they will take part in matches with South Shields , Harton Colliery and Rey rolle's cricket clubs , while on August 19 , the Northern footballers will play the South Shields A.F.C. players on behalf of the Shipwrecked Mariners Society . The only public practice football games will be on Saturday 15th and Saturday 22nd August , the kick off on cach occuzion being at 3.15 .
