OCR SPORTS SPECIAL
January 27th 1979 , he day South Shields played on the C.C.ground
And Johnny Rundle sums it all up in this letter :
*** As vice - chairman of South
Shields Football Club , may I , through Social Scene say
Cricket
a big THANK YOU to CC , lovely Cricket
their ground committee , bar steward and staff in helping Sputh Shields out of their ground problems .
I honestly believe that CC have South Shields Football Club at heart especially in Simonside . We now have the luxury of 3 Simonside operators on our Supporters ' Association Committee Deborah
Rundle , Violet Sayer and Mary Purcell all belonging F103'shift .......
Deborah Rundle runs an " Under 16's " team in a Sunday League and is on the look - out for budding players . If any CC employees have anyone who may be interested , please contact Deborah .
BIG THANK - YOU
Getting back to the match , Shields versus Horden in the Durham Challenge Cup , we got under way 15 minutes late as Horden were reluctant to play because of hard ground . Could I , at this point , mention John Brown , our Groundsman and his efforts to get the match played . A BIG THANK YOU JOHN ! The game continued with a full clubhouse which kept the doorman busy . The match was covered from the Social Club by Radio Newcastle and , reporters came from as far as Hartlepool , Newcastle and South Shields . The result was disappointing , a 1-1 draw , Horden equalising after half - time on a disputed penalty .
Also attending the game were the President and Secretary of the Wearside League , members of the Northern League and local leagues who spoke to Ivan Harkness , our Social Club Chair man , and myself and expressed how they were staggered at the facilities of CC .
May I , on behalf of South Shields Football Club Comm mittee end by saying that the hospitality shown by Ivan Hark ness , Barry Porthouse and his staff on Saturday , January 27th will always be remembered by
us .
As I wrote recently in the Shields Gazette ... with friends who care like the ones I have mentioned , South Shields Foot ball Club can only go from strength to strength . "

Spot anyone you know in this line - up with the South Shields Football Club ? You SHOULD be able to recognise Bob McIntyre ( extreme right ) , Barry Porthouse ( third from right ) , the three standing on the extreme left John Rundle , Ivan Harkness and Roy Stidolph . Left of the front row is Gordon Hope . The occasion , of course , was when South Shields played Horden on the CC ground .

The organiser of the tourn ament Jackie Hurst ( warehouse man at Simonside ) writes : - " We would like to express appreciation to the Social committee for the financial help towards the buying of trophies for the winners and runners - up . " A singles tournament is now being run for Simonside workers only , for a really nice trophy which has been kindly donated by Roy Stidolph . Gestures such as this deserve all our thanks . "
This year , too , more will depend on skill than on chance ; a new system is being devised so that good luck won't get anyone as far this year as it did last !
Anybody keen on entering should get in touch with Norman Hunnam or Bob Tuck . There are , report Hunnam and Tuck , several new events being considered . OUT will come table tennis , badminton ,

PS Touchwood , we THINK we have a javelin being lent to us .
ORGANISATION MAN
All those who took part in the Tournament agree that Jackie Hurst himself deserves thanks too for organising it so well . The Simonside Singles tournament is already at the third round stage and 27 players entered . It is hoped that the trophies for both tournaments will be formally presented during a future Disco at the Club .
POSTSCRIPT : Jackie used to organise darts tournaments such as this years ago , before Factory 10 was opened . But the revival has caused so much interest that it is hoped to make the tourna ments annual affairs .
NEXT SOCIAL SCENE WILL BE SPRING TIME ISSUE .
