The Life and Career of Charlie Thomas . In a life long career of seven decades , football was his abiding and consuming passion , and he was a wonderful servant to our national game that he loved , it was indeed his life . His name was a household word in local football circles , and he became a legend in his own lifetime . By any standards his was a quite remarkable career in both management and administration and his achievements were many , and his life long enthusiasm was undiminished and wholehearted . He was greatly admired and respected and widely recognised in his later life as the north east's senior citizen of the game , by all who knew him from his beginnings with a pit village team to his later eminent career with the Football Association . A thoughtful quiet gentleman of outstanding talent and ability as a shrewd , astute and resourceful club manager and skilled administrator , he became a leading figure and the doyen of the game in the north east . His knowledge of the game was vast and his involvement in a long , memorable and most eventful life and career was conspicuous , his contribution at local , regional and national level was massive .
