TH THE LINCOLNSHIRE CHRONICLE , SATURDAY , 13 OCTOBER , 1928 FIVE MEDALS IN ONE SEASON . Another Columbers " Discovery ' Ain Interminable Match My Worst Experience -A Rough Garme Some Orichnet Reminiscences . - - By T. MAIDMENT Moon City's Inside - right ) . I AM another of the Lincola players three , and I remember . the game particu who has graduated from the colliery larly well because I missed a penalty in the last five minutes . to the football field . I was born at Sender land twenty years ago , and I suppose I was playing football soon after I could walk . I began my career as a member of a football team while still at school . Originally I played full back for St Columbus Boys ' School at Sunderland , bet some of the older men interested in us thought I should do better in another position , and in the same season I was selected to play centre - half for Sander land boys . I suppose I must have made a fairly good impression for soon after that I was asked to play at centre - half for the Durham County schoolboys in an inter county match with Lancashire schoolboys . It was , of course , an honour to get a place in the county team while yet so young . After that I had a season with a team of okler boys , who played under the name of St. Columbus ' Institute , and the same year I played a few matches with Robert Thompson's , a dockside team who played in the Wearside League . By that time had begun to think my position was fixed centro - half , but there was to be another change . All this time I had been working in the pit after leaving school . which I have taken part was that at One of the most surprising matches in Nelson a fortnight ago . I never saw a team recover so remarkably as Lincoln did that day . K took our lads the first twenty minutes to settle down to their work and by that time it seemed as though we were in for the biggest defeat in our history , but once they settled down they could do nothing wrong . The way we won that day shows what the team can do . A Terrible Experience . match which Alf . Hale told about last Of course , I remember the Wrexham ever likely to forget . week . Nobody who took part in it is to make anyone who had not the experi It is impossible It was a shocking cold day , with rain , ence realise how terrible a day it was . snow , and sleet falling all the time . The field was like a pond when we went on to it , and the cold wind which was blowing chilled you to the marrow . you alipped - and that was nearly every Every time time you tried to move - you were plunged into stuck it as long as we did not one of us all ice cold bath . Ilowever we Iremonger's " tonic " we could not have If it hadn't been for Albert played more than a few minutes ; as it was , one after the other we dropped out , numbed into uselessness by the terrifo cold . most memorable match . That will always be my can say . It was just chance that brought me to Lincoln . Various clubs had agents in the district ever on the look - out for promis ing young players . Apparently one of these agents must have had his eye on me , for four years ago I was approached by a man who suggested that I should come down for a month's trial with Lin coln City . That was about Christmas 1924 . It seemed a good chance to get out of the pit and follow the game which had alwave of them are for football cup competitions , Columbus Institute . Three appealed most to me , and soon after Christmas that year I came to Lincoln . two for League championships that we I came here as inside - right , a position I won that year . That was the season we had played in during the latter part of my memorable , in & achieved a feat which has become time with St. Columbus ' Institute , and in football records , tor we beat one team , way , in Sunderland which I had been playing when the Lin - known as Tissicks in the final - a teain coln agent saw nie first . It was a big which had never been beaten for several way . I have five medals , all won in one A few football honours have come my season , during the time I was playing with chance and I tried to make the most of it . My first match was with the Lincoln reserves , against Mansfield , and scored two goals that day . I played with the Reserves all that month , and at the end of that time I was signed on . I scored all three goals for our side . seasons . We won three goals to one and very good year , scoring 98 goals in that That season was my best , I think . I had season . An Interminable Match . A Football Family . I remember another match of those I cannot say , like some , that I had to days which made a bit of local football ght my way to a football carcer through history . It was the final for a local all kinds of opposition . I had every en - cup and 8t . Columbus Institute were couragement at home , because I happen playnig a shipyards team known as Dux to come from a football playing family.fords . We had to play sixt mes before I have a brother playing goalkeeper wo reached a decision . Three times we for Newport , an uncle is the inside- made a draw of three goals each ; twice right for Tranmere , and another uncle , Ned Charlton , played full back for Fulham all through the war . His son , by the way , came for a month's trial with Linooln some time ago , but did not fix up here . Practically every male member of our family is , or has been , a football player . Sometimes we played together , at other times we were opposed to one another , I have played against my uncle who is at Tranmere several times , but as he plays inside - right like myself I have not really played directly opposite him , although we were on opposing sides , we made a goalless draw , and in the last match they beat us five goals to one . We were all getting a bit stale by then and were glad when the match was over . It was near the end of the season , and in our anxiety to get it over we played four times in one week . The heaviest defeats in which I have had to share have all been whilst playing with Lincoin City Reserves . One match I remember well was at Mexborough , against that team , when we lost by six goals to two . That , I believe , was about the worst game I ever played . I missed a lot of chances that day . If I had Although I am a long way from my taken half the chances that I had we native place and where I learned my foot - should have won . There was another ball , I am regularly meeting some of my match at Chesterfield , in a hospital cup old chums of those old days . Quite a tie , when we were beaten by six goals number are in this district . Robertson , to one , and Stockport's seven to three who is goalkeeper for Notts County , and Charles , their full back , were both in the St. Columbus ' team at Sunderland when I Most of my sports career has been was playing there . Warren , of Lincoln devoted to the football field , but I have now , and Hkrrison , who is well - known done a bit of playing oricket , too . down here , were also members of the same fond of that game , and some years ago teams as myself at Sunderland ; and Harry did fairly well as a batsman . I used Roberts , who once played at Lincoln , was to play with a club called Fulwell at a member of the Lancashire schoolboys Sunderland . Bobby Burt , who plays team when I played against them as a outside left for Hartlepools United , was member of the Durham County Boys . with the same team , and my uncle , Billy Charlton , of Tranmere , and my elder brother , Tom Maidment , also played with against us will also be an unpleasant memory for all time . I was My Roughest Experience . I have , I suppose , been rather lucky in us . We were in that eluh for several that I have not met with any really un - seasons , and I did pretty well with them . pleasant experiences on the football feld , One match in particular I shall always though I have been in some rough games , remember because it was played through . and in some which provided a good deal out in the rain . We wanted to get it of thrills . The roughest match in which finished and though it rained all day we I ever took part was , I think , at Denaby , went on with the game . Billy Charlton soon after I signed on for Lincoln . I was made 112 that day , and I made 86 . playing for the Reserves and I don't think I have ever known a rougher game . The Denaby men were giving out the boot right from the start and a big crowd were cheer ing and encouraging them to kick us rather than the ball . We finished up with seven men only , all the others had gone Next week Harry Pringle , the Impe ' off injured , but none of the Densby men inside forward , will relate amusing . were hurt , our chapa must have been 100 experiences during eleven years as a gentle with them . We lost , four goals to professional . / That , I think , about concludes my story . I have always liked the game of football and have always tried to do my best for my club and the spectators who are our supporters .
