WHO'S WHO AT THE ' HILL ' Notable ' Pompey ' Players who Took Part in To - day's Struggle . PAST PERFORMANCES OF THE TEAMS . ( By " THE CRITIC . " ) oppon that to day The majority of the alue in he North ; Eastern area were again favoured by the " luck of the draw " for the first round of the English Cup competition . Three of the five teams were drawn at home , while a fourth , Newcastle United , persuaded their ents to change the venue , so saw only one of the big North Eastern clubs -Middlesbrough - playing on " foreign " sol . Of the five matches down for decision e one of principal interest , locally , of course , was that in which South Shields and Pors mouth were the opposing forces , and as a result of this engagement the Shieldsinen had high hopes of appearing in the secon : 1 round of the competition - a feat they had never previously performed . The record of the Shieldsmen , neverthe less , is an exceptionally good one , and they had done so well in the preliminary rounds in preceding seasons they were exempted last season right up to the first round proper . During the last three Cup competitions South Shields had contested in the right to appear in the first round . the season 1913 the " locals " defeated Lin coln City in the last qualifying round , only to lose to Gainsborough Trinity , whom they met in the next stage . The season following . South Shields defeated Luton Town in the qualifying round only to find another stiit obstacle in their way in the first round pro per - Burnley , who that year won the Cup , dismissing them from the competition by three goals to one . At the next attempt Ful ham put a check to the Shieidsmen's career by reason of a victory by two goals to one . During the war the national competition was suspended , but was resumed again last season . Liverpool were the Seasiders ' oppon ents in the first round on that occasion , an - l as everyone knows , the Liverpudlians came to Horsley Hill , enforced a replay at Anfiek , where they administered the knock - out once again to the Shieldsmen . Remember Huddersfield . Since their promotion to the Second Divi sion , South Shields have shown gradual improvement , and to - day we find them strongly in the running for further honours , viz . , promotion to the First Division . The Sea siders will do well to bear in mind the splen did achievement of Huddersfield Town , last season , who not only gained promotion by heading the Second Division table , but also reached the final stage of the English Cup Competition , when they were defeated , after extra time , by Aston Villa . Compared with the team which did duty for Shields ainst Liverpool on January 8th last year , that which was fielded at Hors ley Hill to - day differed in po fewer than six instances , the five players appearing on each occasion being Walker , Cresswell , Maitland , Hopkins and Woods . The men who filled the remaining positions were Metcalfe ( for Dreyer ) , Hampson ( for Frith ) , and Keenly . side , Lillycrop , Hawes and Donald ( for Charl ton , Smith ( J.W. ) , Oxberry and Smith ( A.L. ) . The centre forward position on that occasion was filled by Woods , who to - day played at inside - right . SHIELDS SATURDAY , 1 Below we append a short sketch of the players who wore the favourite Red and Green " colours of the Seasiders this after noon . 20078 ALL GAZETTE , JANUARY 8TH , ( 921 |
