The game started in showery weather before about 14,000 spectators .

During a spell of attacking by the Rother ham forwards , the movement being initiated on the left wing , Cresswell was called upon to deal with a dangerous situation . He made no mistake about the business , however , with the result that play was again transferred to the Rotherham half , where some pretty com
ned work was served up to the spectators by the visiting forwards .
Shields were now having a slightly little better of the exchanges . The homme defence was severely teeted , while Bainbridge got in a lot of hard and good work , but the inside men did not make effective use of his passes . A partial clearance by Alton gave Woods a chance , but he hesitated too long , allowing Millership to clear the danger . The Rother ham goai had a very narrow escape when Kirkbride put in a fine oblique shot , which Sutcliffe just succeeded in tipping over the bar .
Fro a subsequent corner Chambere se : the home , orwards moving , and Lounds , after rounding Maitland , transferred to Lees , who centred into the goalmouth .
