Nottingham Forest were the Shieldsmen's on the Forester's left wing , left Higgind in opponishts at Horsley Hill this afternoon , good position for a cross shot which Walker and although the Seasider record in the dealt with smartly . Prior to this afternoon the visitors occupied fourteenth place on the League chart with 12 points for as many games , and the Seasiders were at the head of the table with 18 points and an unbeaten home certificate .

The Shieldsmen were not at full strength Bainbridge and Richardson being unfit for duty , but Charlton and Keenlyside who have deputised for them in the last two games have proved most capable substitutes , and a simple save there was no ground for anxiety on this score . Dick Parker , who made such a bril liant debut at Horsley Hill fortnight ago made his second appearance before a home crowd as leader of the Shields attack .

In the corresponding game last South Shields defeated the Foresters by five goals to two , and at Nottingham the teams played a goaliess draw .

After abortive attempts by Woods and Parker to direct the ball through a crowd of players , Hawes found -himself well placed , but on this occasion he was at fault in ' his marksmanship and skied the ball with only the custodian to beat .
Once again the Shields forwards got to work , but they met with stout opposition from the visitor's half - back ine , and it was not verv often that they were given much scope . Hawes was working for position when he dallied too long with the ball , and was dispossessed by Beiton : whi'e a few minutes later the same player caused the Forester's defence some anxiety by clever movement . which left Woods in a splendid position . The Shields ' inside right headed into the goal . keeper's hands and from his part al clear lance Woodsain kot possession and tested Johneon with a hot shot which the visiting custodian dealt with in great s'yle .

There was a gate of about 17,000 when , the teams turned out . Walker , again won the toss , and the Shieldsinen elected to play towards the sea end in the opening half .
Elliott started for the visitors , and in first minute Charlton got well down on the Selds ' right wing , but lost the ball in touch . From the throw - out Hopkins secured just outside the penalty area , and tried a shot which was woefully high . Immediately fol lowing Johnson's goal kick , Hawes tried & long shot which missed the upright by a foot , and after an unsuccessful attempt by Keenlyside and Hawes to break through the opposing defence , Johnson was called upon to deal with a long shot from Dreyer which caused him no trouble .
