The visitors had a big advantage in weight , Iremonger being the tallest custodian seen at Horsley Hill this season : Lillyerop won the toss , and in the first few minutes Wilson and the South Shields centre worked their way down in promising style , and from Charlton's centre Marriott gave a corner in attempting to clear . The Shields ' right winger placed well , and an exciting tusele followed in the Nott's goalmouth , several of the Shields forwards making ineffectual attempts to get the ball through the crowd of players in front of them , and eventually Cope brought temporary relief to his side . From a delightful centre by Charlton the Nott's goal had an exceedingly narrow escape , and after Iremonger had cleared from Lillycrop the Shieles ' centre and Hawes found themselves well placed , but before either of them could take advantage of their opportunities the ball was flicked away in the nick of time by Cope Tricky Play by Hawes . The Shieldsmen were attacking vigorously , and Hawes was cheered for a brilliant effort on the extreme left , by which he manoeuvred a capital opening for Donald . The Shields left winger , however , was charged off his shot by Cope , and the ball went harmlessly past the upright . Dreyer put an end to & movement by Henshall and Holen , after which Hopkins was prominent for some clever stopping work , but his pass was faulty , and the visit ing forwarde once more applied pressure through their left wing pair . Woodland landed the ball into the goal mouth from a free - kick , and Maitland cleared a dangerous situation . J. W. Robson the gave his forwards pos Ression , and Charlton , after bleverly rounding Marriott in the corner , was brought down by the Notts full - back , Wileon heading over from the free - kick . A dangerous attack hy Henehall and Holen asfrustrated by Maitland and Hopkins , and Chatten was racing off on his own when be was badly fouled Hawes was often conspicuous for brilliant footwork and clever strategy , while Lillycrop led his forwards with rare judgment . On one occaeton Hawes came very near scoring when he tried two shots fer goal at close sange , the first of which was charged down , and the second diverted over the line .. The Shieldemen were practically monopo lising the play , but the visitors were well served by their defenders . A Miraculous Escape . Lillycrop was going straight into an open goal when Marriott coolly dispossessed him , and a few minutes later the Notis goal had a really miraculous escape . Lillycrop was hell up by Maritt as he was steadying himsel for his shot , and before the full - back could effect a clearance Wilson bangel the ball into the goalmouth . Iremonger fell in gathering it and twice lost it as he lay on the ground , and after indulging in a little " etunt , " he managed to push the ball to Cope , who landed it into a place of safety . Hoffman was practically idle , ard during the first half hour he had not a single shot to deal with . The Shieldsmen were attacking almost incessantly , but they were up against a great defence . juggling SHIELDS FOOTBALL . GAZETTE SATURDAY , FEBRUARY 261 , 92 / Shields Still Pressing . S Wilson and Charlton combined smartly on the right , and from one of the Shields right winger's well - timed etres , Lillycrop , when well placed , sent high over the bar . Charl ton was doing exceedingly well on the Shields right wing , and he and Hawes were easily the best men in the line . The visitors resorted to the one - back game , and the Shields forwards - Lillycrop in par . ticular - were frequently pulled up for off side infringement . Hoffman handled for the from the interval The with the sun in their faces . Play for a con siderable time was in the open till made a good effort for the home team , but Browne received his shot . The clearance was slowly made and there was a run along to the other end , but without any incident of note . was The home team again got down and a corner was forced , but the situation clared and play again brought down to mid field . The Wallsend forwards pressed , but did not become dangerous . Richardson returned a long shot from Reserves , and then Richardson and Greenwell made tracks for the home goal . They could not get fairly away , however . On another occasion Parker took the ball up the field . but he failed to pass as he might have done and lost the ball when near goal . Parker Scores . Again Wallsend got away and the ball was sent past , and this was repeated in a run by McCall . Shields forwards got up , but Parker was slow in action and missed the oppor . tunity . A moment later Layhe passed to PARKER , who shot and opened the scoring for the visitors . Johnson made an opening for Wallsend and then McCal ! and Kerr led in another attack and Browne had to make a clearance A fine attack was next made by Wallsent who drove the Shields men back . The bal however , did not reach the neighbourhood of the Shields goa : the judgment and decisio of whose backs was good , and these qualities were absent from the attacking line .
