Throughout his long career , his involvement in the game was supported by his long suffering wife , who predeceased him , she a football ' widow ' for many years . Most men who are successful in any field have a good woman behind them , and Charlie was no exception . Those occasions when things did not goes so well , usually caused loss of sleep ..... Everything to Charlie was either black or white , and he was particularly noted for being very principled in all matters and stuck to the rules . There is an old saying to the effect that ' they pass this way but once ' , an accolade as this would seem most appropriate and fitting when one reflects on the monumental endeavours and contribution he gave to the game of football he loved so very much . His presence and advice will be very well remembered by all who knew him as a good friend and trusted mentor .
