Sheffield Wednesday paid their first visit to South Shields this afternoon in search of League : points . The Wednesday are one of the oldest clubs in the country and as far back as 1889-90 they appeared in the Anal of the English Cup competition while on two . opcasions they have won the national trophy . At the end of last season they were rele gated to the Second Division and they have Jared rather badly in their new company .
Out of 27 matches played they have only won half a dosen , while in 15 instances the maximum points have been surrendered . With only 18 points to their credit taey occu pied a lowly position on the League chart , the Shieldsmen being more favourably placed with 32 points as the result of 26 games , 13 of which had been won .
A drastic change was made in the Shields attack , an entirely new right wing being introduced George Keenlyside was dropped in favour of Charlton , and as Harry Woods was still unfit for duty , Hetherington of the Reserves as given his first game with the Seniors to the exclusion of Jack Smith , who has recently been deputising for Woods : Hetherington is a Sunderland youth and his play with the Reserves has been so consis tendly good that it was generally recognised that a trial with the Second Leaguers could not long be denied him .

The Game .
Walker lost the toss , and the Seasiders played towards the sea end in the opening half . The ground was very heavy and treacherous in places . Following a spell of mid - field work , Hopkins gave Charlton possession on the right and the Shields ' right winger promptly returned the ball into the centre where Lillycrop's shot was charged down by Bellas .
Davison was called upon to handle from Lillyerop and he effected an easy clearance after which Smelt and Hall , the Wednesday right wing pair , made some progress , but were eventually pulled up by Maitland ...
The Shields left back again came to the rescue a few minutes later when Smelt was shaping well , but the visitors con tinued to apply pressure and a great shot by Hall was smartly tipped over the bar by Walker . The corner was - splendidly placed by Lofthouse and a brief struggle in the Shields ' goalmouth cuminated in Cresswell relieving the situation with a strong clearance .
A minute later Taylor , the visiting centre forward , missed the upright by a foot . Charlton and Hetherington endea youred to make progress on the right , but they were always well held by Price and Bellas and selgom were they permitted to enter the danger zones Play was some What scrappy and up to this stage the South Shields had hardly get into their stride Taking advantage of anfiskick by Bellas , Hawes tried a long first time shot which went - wide and after Cresswel had frustrated a promis . ing combined effort by Lofthouse and
forwards
