OCR	COVENTRY C. v . SOUTH SHIELDS . South Shields were at Coventry to - day , engaged in the return League game with the City . The visitors made one change in their side from that on duty at Horsley Hill last Saturday , Jack Smith being given a trial at centre forward , to the exclusion of Charlton . This is the first occasion that Smith has figured in the first team this saison , though last season be was a regular meinber of the senior side , oper ating at inside right , where he proved the most prolific goal - getter . It was fully expected that he would acquit ´himself creditably in his new position . The teams to - day were : Ae was anticipated , Coventry had benefited by the lesson of a week ago , and played a sounder game in all respects . Shielde found the opposition more , vigorous , and had little luck in the open , and none at all in the goal mouth . A vigorously contested first half , in which both goals were visited , came to a con eion with a clean sheet . Half - time score : COVENTRY CITY SOUTH SHIELDS In tehe second half Shields pressed strongly to break the ice , but were met by a resolute defence . Never slow to force play up field , the Coventry attack , finely fed from mid - field , broke away , and luck and good management combined resulted in the Shields defence being beaten . The Shielde forwards again transferred play , and they were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area . This was taken by Ormston , who shot straight at Barnes , who easily cleared . . Final score : A corner to Wallsend eight minutes from the end resulted in some excitement in the Shields goalmouth . A shot from Kerr was saved by Hoffman , but the referee awarded the visitors a goal . From the press box , rit would appear that Hoffman was over the line when he saved .
