OCR HULL CITY V. SOUTH SBIELDS Expectations of a second gate were ruined by a heavy downfall of min , and the greasy turf suggested that the players would have a difficulty in retaining their toothold .
Shields introduced Kifkbride and Keenly . gide on the wings and Bampeon in the half back line , whilst the homesters were unchanged from the team which drew at Shields last week ,

Shields Early Lead .
Shields commenced before 7.000 spectators , and almost immediately Keenlyside was dangerous , on the right , but Woods con pletely missed the ball with his head .
Wright - looked dangerous when he raced through on his own , and Cresswell had to fall back on Walker , who offeeted a fine clearance . Pretty play by the whole of the visiting forwards left KIRKBRIDE in pos Bession , and controlling the ball in a fine manner be doubled close in and completely beat Mercer after five minutes play .
The lead was well deserved , as Hull had seen little of the Shields half .
The homestere now had a glimpse of the Shields territory , and Bleakley centred to Watson , who was hoplessly wide with his
header .
An equaliser was imminent when Wright put across the Shields goalmouth , but the whole of the home forwards missed the ball , and a touch was conceded . Cresswell was rather shaky at this ste and needlessly conceded a corner , which proved fruitless .
Shields were playing first - class . football , and the home defence was hard put to to keep their goal intact , and a further score appeared likely at any moment . Spasmodic attempts by the Hull forwards were well held by Cresswell and Maitland , the former by this time having settled down to his paul game .
With Walker unsighted , Wilson ' fired in hard low shot that the Shields keeperfaught hut dropped and the Hull team appealed for a goal . Although it was disallowed it was a very near thing indeed ...
Walker's Grand Saves .
Hull now pressed hotly but Walker saved his citadel in magnificent style . There was plenty of excitement and the crowd were kept at fever heat .
Cresswell was again shaky and not too reliable under severe pressure , and fre quently miskicked . His partner , Mait land , however , kicked and tackled in ne style and frequently pulled up dangerous rushes on the part of the home forwards . The Shields forwards were undoubtedly the most cohesive and forceful in style , but the home defenders were playing a heroic game .
Bleakley was pulled up for a particulraly nasty foul on Woods , but the resultant free kick was clared .
Weakness in front of goal prevented Hull from scoring , and they missed a glorious opportunity of equalising when Hughes sent the bal across the goal mouth , only to see ' Wilson , to the disgust of the crowd , put Hopelessly wide when well placed .
Kirkbride Brilliant .
The game was being hotly contested . at a fine pace , but neither side were able at this stage , to claim superiority . The leaders ' forwards , however , had more finish about their movements . Kirkbride was on the top of his formrand often had Brandon guessing ..
Wright made a dashing run and placed the leather across the centre , and Wilson had only the Shield custodian to beat , but again , to the mortification of the spectators , the Shields goalkeeper made remarka full - length dive and saved . Hunt could do anything but - score , the finishing of their forward work being very weak
The weak display of the home forwards and Walker's brilliano prevented the homesters frour , scom Shields's early goal was proving invaluable from their point of view , bat Hall's efforts were deserving of an equaliser .
Shields , however , quickly assumed the aggressive and remained in the visitors ' territory until the interval .
Half - time soore : SOUTH SHIELDS HULL CITY
Play had been fairly even with Hullgat tiores making bold bids for the equaliser , but the superior finish of the Shields for wards clearly sentitled them to the goal scored by Kirkbride . Wilson recommenced the game , and ran down the touch . line for
