OCR BLACKPOOL v . SOUTH SHIELDS . Tremendous interest was shown in the risit of South Shields to Blackpool this after noon , as every point was of exceptional value to both teams . Heavy rain began to fall shortly before the start . There was no change on either side , the teams being as

The Game .
th Shields started in splendid fashion , he Blackpool backs were called upon to some dangerous rushes in the first few ates . Richardson forced a corner after a clever individual effort , but the flagkick was successfully dealt with , and the home men inade an attempt to force an opening , but Bedford was not quick enough for Hopkins ..
The Shieldsmen again attacked , and the Blackpool goalkeeper effected a brilliant save by taking the ball from the foot of Hawes when the Shields inside left had smartly worked his way to within a yard of the goal .
Hawes and Lillycrop were cf en prominent for fine combination which completely out witted the opposing backs , and on one occa sion the Shields centre , when splendidly placed , was wide with his shot . An attempt by the Blackpool forwards to break away was Buccessfully frustrated by Robson , and a minute or two later Bedford was inches wide with a shot which would have left Hoffman completely beaten . Blackpool again applied pressure and Barras headed over when in good position with Hoffman out of his goal . The home men settled down to more busi nesslike methode and the Shielde defenders were given a strenuous time .
Shields Dangerous
The visitors were not long in resuming the offensive , however , and the Blackpool goal had some anxious moments during well directed attacks by Woode , Lillyorop and Hawes . In spite of the heavy going play was fast and exciting . The Blackpool forwarde had another spell of attacking , and , control ling the ball smartly , they put the Shielde goal in danger . When Robson was beaten , Maitland rushed across and cleared in great style , but a few minutes later the home men again applied pressure and Mee dropped in a delightful centre which left Charles with an open goal , but the home right winger missed badly .
Hopkins served his forwarde well , but Hawes and Lillycrop w'ere unable to make much progress , and midfield play continued for some time . The South Shielde forwarde were not showing the promise of the earlier stages the game , but they kept up the pace , and the home acks , were frequently called upon . Hawes skimmed the crossbar with a long shot , and at the other end Charles initiated a movement which culmin ated in the home men obtaining the lead through BARRAS after 23 minutes ' play .
Blackpool Two Up .
This success was somewhat unexpected , " and it was really more than the home men deserved . The Shieldsmen retaliated with a determined attack and Richardson saved smartly when the home goal was in difficulties . Keenlyside beat Gatin , and put in a splendid . centre from which Tullock cleared .. Shortly after this an unusual incident occurred . Harry Woods hit the side net with such force that the ball went through it and South Shields appealed for a goal , but the referee , after consulting both linesmen , gave a goal kick . The visitors continued to maintain the pressure for some time , but they were opposed to a resolute defence . From a sudden break - a - way , Charles scored a second goal for Blackpool from a corner kick . Half - time :

A free kick put Blackpool on the attack after the interval , but Maitland relieved the pressure and a timely pass by Richardson sent Hawes away . The Shields inside left got well into their opponents ' quarters , but the attack was successfully repulsed .
Blackpool again applied pressure and three corners were forced in quick suc cession , the Shields defenders being kept . busy , but they never wavered . Keenly side and Woods transferred play to the other end and following some clever work by Hawes and Lillycrop , WOODS scored with a long drive to the corner of the pet . Richardson and Hawes were prominent for pretty combination and the Shields forwards continued to have much the better of the play .
