Referee : Mr J. Cable , of Grangetown . The Game . The ground was in good condition and play opened very briskly . Hawes took the ball into the bome goalmouth and shot but the sphere went wide of the mark . At the other end Cragg tested Walker very severely with a rattling shot but the Shields custodia proved equal to the occasion . Play was fast and exciting in the early stages and was pretty evenly divided . After 10 minutes the homesters brought pressure to bear on the Shields goal and Gault broke his way through and to a certain extent was successful but unfortunately placed over the crossbar . Returning to the attack again the visitors goal underwent a severe bombardment for a sine . Walker , their custodian , exhibried excellent judgment , however , and after fisting away a shot from Walsh and clear ing a hard drive from Gault Cresswell was able to effet a clearance . Stockport continued to have the better of the exchanges and at this stage of the game play was pretty well confined to the visitor's half . A movement initiated by the Stock port left seemed to prove dangerous and indeed Newbigging succeeded in putting across a good centre , but the ball was trav elling too quickly for Gsult to gather it and following an attempt by Beattie.to return it to the centre , Cresswell kicked away . Stockport's full backs played & very whenever South the good game , and Shields ' forwards took up the offensive task . Falmsley once prevented danger by taking Hawes when he hall off the foot of the latter was on the point of shooting . Later , Stockport pressed hotly , and it seemed remarkable that the South Shields goal should remain intact , but such was the case . Shields Defence Supreme . Cresswell and Maitland played a strong to checkmate the game and were able designs of the home forwards . Thirty seven minutes from the start the visitors took up the offensive in a vigorous fash Jon , and Parker and Hawes gave Hardy cause for anxiety , sending in two very fine shots from which the Stockport goal keeper brought off good saves , m uch to the delight of the spectators of the home club . Anderson , the homester's new left half back , was very cool and put in some good work , which was of value in setting the home forwards going in the right direc tion . The game was a very hard one , and was keenly contested up to the interval . Keeping the up the attack , Shieldsmen gained considerable ground , but the Ashing tonians defended splendidly . Urwin fed his forwards well , but at the Shields end both Ridley and Robson kicked out strongly . There was a fine passing movement the Shields halves and between forwards , but again the move ment was unsuccessful . Wilson sent the ball forward and Charlton and Green well raced up for Davidson to clear from their feet . Greenwell was again well . placed a moment later . but he charged off his shot by Urwin . A run up by Ashington was led by Davis who sent out to Ferrier . The Ashington winger made good progress . but ultimately firmly held by Robson . was Hoffman's Penalty Saves . Traynor during a later raid on the Ash ington goal handled in the penalty area and the kick was taken by Robertson . After about 20 minutes a similar hand ling incident occurred in the forbidden RIDLEY area at the Ashington end . took the kick and put the leather far out of Davidson's reach for the first goal of the match . was There was a spell of midfield play until Clark tried to change the venue , but was pulled up for effside . Charlton next got away for Shields , and sent out to Layhe . The Shields winger went for goal , but was pulled up by Buxton . Theh leather bobbed about in the goa mooth after Hutchineon had sent in , and CLARK ultimately banged the ball into the net with Hoffman on the ground , recovering himself from a previous save . CHARLTON again gave Shields the lead dose in after Davidson had punched out a high dropping shot . Half - time score : SOUTH SHIELDS RESERVES ...... 2 ASHINGTON 1 On resuming the Shieldsnen continued The to force the play and in the first few minutes were another goal ahead . incident provoked considerable Jaugater when PIERCE , in endeavouring to clear from Greenwell , put through his own goal , Shields and Wilson , the inside man promptly rushed up and wrung his hand . Shields were more prominent in attack during the second half , but a feature of the game was the brilliant work of the Ashington defence . There were frequent instances when both Buxton and Pierce individually bore the brunt of hot attacks by the Seasiders , while Davidson was seldom at fault . At the same time , however , the Shields forwards were just a little timid at a moment when an extra spurt might have made all the difference . In occasional raids on the Shields goal , Hoffman , and his backe before him , were always reliable . Fimal score SOUTH SHIELDS ASHINGTON ************ 32 |
