The weatter was delightfully fine , but much too hot for football . The ground was
splendid condition , and there were early indications of a record crowd . An hour
well
before the start the enclosure was filled and supporters were still coming up in thousands . When the game started there was a crowd of nearly 20.000 .
There were two changes in the Birming ham team Liddle who played several games for South Shields Reserves last season taking the place of Roulson at right half , and Millard displacing McClure at centre half .
The Game .
Peh teams had a rousing reception when they took the field . Withs Walker , who explained the seasiders , won the toss , and the Shieldsnen had the sun behind then on the opening half . The Birmingham left wing were at once dangerous , and a consid erable amount of ground was gained through

There was a sensational reopening of the game . Inmediately after resuming Richard son went straighht down and with a terrific shot from the wing struck the crossbar . Ré ceiving from the rebound , LILLYCROP headed in the Seasiders second goal amid terrihe excitement .
************* .... ***********
The Shieldsmen were absolutely worrying their opponents.and Richardson was playing the game of his life .
He sent in another
great shot which struck the side of the net , and he and Hawes were responsible for de lightful combined efforts which kept the visiting defenders guessing all Running clean through the Birmingham de fence , Richardson was again in evidence , and

The visitors were almost entirely hemmed in their own half , and the South Shields forwards were playing with such that understanding the excellent visitors ' goal was rarely out of danger .
Birmingham were never in the picture during the earlier stages of the second half . Again and again the Shields for wards swept down the field and every aggressive movement spelt danger to the Birmingham defence . Several corners fell to their lot , none of which produced anything and Lillycrop on one occasion after dribbling through was held up by Tremelling against the post .

ailed . Hopkins set his forwards going , and Bainbridge , Woods and Lillycrop participated in a well organised effort which culminated in the South Shields centre landing in a charged down , while a few minutes later both Bainbridge and Woods missed by inches . the ball scraping the cross - bar on both occasions .

The visitors . under hard pressure . defended valiantly . Tremelling vas always a reliable custodian . Bainbridge was cheered for a tricky dribble which took him right into the centre where he Lane ded was dispossessed by Millard . an attack by the visiting front rank , and Maitland and Cresswell had some diffi culty in dealing with the situation . kenshaw settled the matter for however , by sending over .

" Big Guns " Mis - fire ! The South Shields forwards were irresist and rarely indeed were the Birminghamn " big grns " given an opportunity to open fire . When they did have this opportunity they were faulty in their markemanship , and there were many mis - fires . As a matter of fact the Shield - men practically monopolised the play , and the Birmingham efforts were almost entirely concentrated on the work of defence .
A strong attack by Richardson and Hawes placed the Seasiders on the offensive , and Lilyerop had hard luck in failing to trap the ball when well placed . A free kick , dievasly taken by Maitland , placed the Imingham Hefence in soine danger , but Womack came to the rescue and nothing Lappetel .
Another break away by the Birmingham 11t wing looked omncus for the Seasiders , Lane's pass out to the right was badly Ball , the Birmingham right back , left the ted , and Burkinshaw failed to reach t . field through an injury to his foot . There was no stopping the South Shields A forwards once they got into their stride . The flag kick was well placed by Richard . free kick near the corner flag was taken by e , but it proved abortive . break through was frustrated by Millard .
Two minutes later , Lillyerop pounced on the ball , and hanged in a shot which Trem elling falled to gather , but luckily for him the ball struck him on the elbow , struck the crossbar and went over for a comer .
South Shields applied further pressure through Bambridge and Woods , and follow ing a clever individual effort by Lillycrop , the Shields centre sent in one of his citarac teristic long shots which was just a trifle wide . After the Seasiders had been awarded an abortive corner , Lane , Whitehouse , and Shields Murgan got busy , and the South ks had an anxious time until the Bir ngham centre . finally drove in a shot wissed the upright by a couple of

Another conuer fell to Richardson , but this time his kick was faulty , and the visi tors cleared easily . In the absence of Ball , Birmingham resorted to the one - lack game , and despite their handicap they put up a sound defence . Hawes forced Tremelling 10 . give a corner from a fast ground shot , and Bainbridge put over from the flag kick . The players were obviously feeling the effects of the heat , and while the pace for the greater part of the game had been terrific it slack- ened considerably towards the end .
The Brums ? goal had another narrow escape as a result of a determined effort by Bainbridge , following which Dreyer forced Tremelling to Bandle , and from his clear ance Woods sent high over the bar .
It was uniy the brilliance of Tremelling . that saved the wisitors from a very much heavier defeat than that which they suf fered . There are many thrills in the last few minutes of the game as the result of the
